The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
To my thread readers:
Over the years I consistently receive a few comments a year about one post here in particular. Yesterday I received another one (interestingly, exactly 7 years, to the day - March 20, 2008 - that I made the post). Each time I consider re-posting it because it's valuable information. Would probably be better to post elsewhere on this forum... but it's in this thread so for now I'll keep it here. If anyone has a suggestion, I may expand it and put it in a better spot. Anyway, here it is, freshly updated today from 7 years ago:

Just a quick primer for the newbies before tonight's list, so you don't go all hog wild and break the bank:

Many of tonight's names get search results. But remember that you won't get that many views if you just park the domain. A name can have exact monthly searches of hundreds or thousands and you might still get only a handful of views on a parked page per month.

Some good development, some search engine optimization, some marketing, are what will bring the traffic. Then ads like google adsense are what will hopefully bring you cash. So don't reg these kinds of names with the intent to just park and receive traffic... traffic names are pretty much long gone, only to be found on the aftermarket or in the drops. For fresh regs, reg a name you have some interest in developing, even if it's only small development.

Traffic is not a good reason to reg these names. Reg them to develop, or because you love them, or because you strongly think you might have an end user for them, or to 'round out' your portfolio with names in some categories you want to represent.

Searching names with google won't show you the traffic; a term with even millions of google page results might get no actual searches whatsoever. But checking google IS valuable for showing how common a term is, how it is used in conversation, business, etc., shows what kinds of people/industries use the term, and shows how attractive it might be as a brandable name.

If you buy a name to develop, then sales don't matter; but if you buy a name to sell, you'll want to look at SALES of these kinds of names. For example, violenceForum.com is a great name to develop into talks on violence, problems, law, etc. (it's on that 2008 list and is currently still available)... but when you look into domain sales, you see almost no sales with words including 'violence' as a keyword. So you know it'll be a hard sell to an end user, but you might get a couple or a few times your reg fee from an interested party or domainer. To see which kinds of names sell, check out www.sedo.com, go to the domain search area under the 'buy domains' drop down menu. Type in your keyword, and then see how many names are GETTING ACTUAL BIDS. Ignore how many thousands of names are there, because if there aren't a lot of names with current bids, you're gonna have a hard time getting bids on yours. This isn't written in stone, but it's a safe indicator to go by. To see actual sales of domains and check keyword sales, take a peek at www.namebio.com, which lists sales nicely.

Note that if you're searching multiple-word names at google (like 'Foot Licking Idiots', instead of a single word like 'fleeborama'), you need to put a quotation mark " before and after the term; this will bring you ONLY the results containing all those words together, in that order exactly. If you don't use the quotation marks, you'll get huge results because google will show you the results of all pages showing those words, singly or together, anywhere on the page.
Example:
me a dummy -- 77,000,000 results for me a dummy (means those three words can be all over the websites).
"me a dummy" -- 312,000 results for "me a dummy" in quotations (means those three words were found together, in that order, on this many sites. Usually in the phrase 'don't call me a dummy').
Just including this because it's surprising how many people still don't know to use quotation marks for google searches to see precise results pages.

'Defensible' is a good thing to keep in mind when regging a domain;
Defensible means to be able to solidly, clearly defend why you bought the name. Not just 'it looked really cool, great for branding, someone in that field will love it'.Y ou need to go further: Would you certainly develop the name? If you didn't sell it, do you still love it enough so that you'd never regret getting it? How exactly would the name be used by you or someone else? Does the name describe that use clearly or will you need to 'convince' someone and get all 'explainy' in why it's such a good name for them to buy? What kind of person or company would actually buy the name? Do you think they really WOULD buy this name, instead of another, for a decent price? Is the name quite unique and perfect to their use, or are there a ton of alternatives they could choose from still at reg fee? Is it realistic to approach this kind of an end user, would they listen to you? Is this kind of name in their 'groove'? How much would they realistically pay for it? (not 'how much do you think it's worth', but look at their company's size and try to determine what you might budget for a domain, if you owned their company) And especially: does it look like they are already perfectly happy with the name they already have? What makes your domain better than theirs?
End users are a hard sell! They usually don't see what you see, and they have other interests for their money. So you'd better have a very clear, very obvious and better domain than theirs, to have any chance of selling it to them.

For brandables, 'think ahead'. We've learned from the LLLL sellout to LOOK AHEAD. But, especially with the now-popular LLLLL and with short hyphen domains like LL-L and L-LL and L-L-L-L etc., there are still a lot available... some trends go up and down, back and forth, sometimes look like they're going somewhere, other times look dead. The key is smart regging, and moderation. I could write a whole book about what to watch for, but just check out the threads in the other areas of Namepros. I mostly buy LLLLL that sound/look like other good words (not look like other crappy words - this is important) like twuck (for truck) and siyns (for signs - note that of these three examples, siyns.com is now available again as of this current post) and golof (for golf), and I also try out typos. But the smallest amount of my LLLLL regs are just because I 'liked' the name, even though it didn't look like anything. Those are the ones to be most careful of; you can reg thousands of names you just 'like', and not sell one. If you absolutely LOVE it, then still let it go. Only get the ones that, after you turn off the computer, make you run back, turn it on, screaming 'I've gotta get that one or I'll never sleep tonight!!!'

And even those are usually a mistake the next day :)
Be real careful.

Okay, that's the end of that old 2008 post. I've changed/updated a few things in it that have changed since that year. I think it has very sober suggestions to keep in mind for anyone considering regging a domain. Good luck. Hopefully I'll post another list in the next week.

Hi All, thanks for your interest and for reviving this thread. Yes, things have changed; I now almost exclusively haunt the expiring domains lists, and those are easy for you to check yourself, and others here do a great job of posting expired names also, so there isn't much need for me to do that in this thread. Also I'm spending a lot more time domaining these days - hours each day with emails, buying/selling - as well as spending a few hours daily with my main website (nothing to do with domaining), so my online time gets a little overwhelming and I just don't feel the urge to add to that by posting here much anymore. Prefer to have more balance in life, get away from the computer, and spend more offline hours each day outside breathing the air :)

Was fun while I did this list, though, miss it a little :)

Oh, I almost never search for adult names, like once each year or two... however I had the itch recently, so if anyone here wants a short list of pretty darn good adult names, there's about 20 I think, just PM me and I'll PM the list back to you.

And thanks everyone for continuing to post regged names in thread.

Until next list :)

ditto!! would love to see your portfolio Bannen :)

Actually my portfolio is dwindling and largely unexciting these days. A couple years back I gave almost all my minisite domains/sites to my domaining partner, there were about 80 of them. Since then I've only built 5 or 6 minisites from new domains, minisites are quite dead. Have let a lot of names drop, so I'm down to just over 100 domains I think. Only a couple worth 5 figures, maybe a dozen worth 4 figures, and the rest worth 3 figures or even What The Hell Did You Reg That One For.

But as you can tell I haven't been active lately, on this forum or with domains. This time of year I like to spend in a condo up at the local ski hill, where I don't get internet (and I have yet to enter the 21st century and actually get a mobile phone). I love the quiet, and am working on a book. In fact I may not domain at all over the next year while I write the book, other than checking in here occasionally and checking for offers at Sedo etc. Had only 4 offers in the last month, but lost them all, ha ha, because it was too long until I responded to each offer, since I was coming to town less than once each week.

Also just bought a new motorcycle, a nice big shiny new cruiser that eats up the road and pounds my nads with its growling vibes. Sorry to plant that image in your tender minds. Planning on some long distance trips starting in a week or so... whenever it stops raining around this part of the country :)

Anyway, sorry to take up all your time with a story rather than a list; just wanted to explain why I haven't been around here much and won't be over the next while, except a quick check-in once in awhile to see whassup lately with you all and the forum. In town for the last while, but tomorrow heading back up to the sticks.

It's a lot of fun here at Namepros, I do miss being active and contributing to these lists and other posts. Keep fingers crossed and maybe I'll be more active again once I settle down after the summer.

Take care, and thanks to anyone who is brave enough to spend their valuable life energy and time in actually perusing my lists here, ha ;)

?? Away from home WEEKS. . .
Doing what ?? (you know I'm NOSEY)
~Patricia - DomainBELL

:cy:

Freezing my buns off in -10 degree weather plus wind chill. Visiting fam. House sitting. Spending too much money starting Christmas shopping. Missing the motorbike and hoping it warms enough for a ride soon. Learning new recipes.
Oh, since I'm here, here's a short list to get us back in the saddle:

Steve Jobs would have if he owned this company, maybe he'd have branded all apps for Blackberry as 'blackberry seeds'. That's what I'd do. It's just a cool name. Perhaps you can find some use for it that is non-TM infringing.
Snarpo.com

Really a great efforts!! Just wow names and list!
Great going!
Keep it Up!

Thanks

Thank you, sorry to say that my namespinning zones in and out these days, according to where I point my time. Haven't done much spinning since before Christmas. All I have sitting here is:

SeeBeverlyHills.com - 'visit' would be better, but if you want to blog about BH then this one works.
SleepingLake.com - very pretty name, and a geo. So pretty in fact that I keep thinking of regging it just because it's so pretty; but I talk myself out of it because I have no plan for it development-wise and I can't see any clear buyer for it. If you like it for something, it's yours.
WantForFree.com - we all want stuff for free. Maybe you can start a donations site.
SloppyFood.com - dunno what you'd use this for, but google the images.
PointedEar/s.com - Think Spock; 'pointed ears' gets 590 monthly goog searches in the USA. Strangely 'pointy ears' gets less, but PointyEars is regged in a few extensions...

Thanks for hanging in. Hopefully I'll do a proper list sooner rather than later :)

Total killer list today, you'll be pleased. Nice terms with good google, names with searches, brandables, and the ever lovin' LLLLL:
........
makerBot.com
....

Happened across this post via google and this 'availabe' name caught my eye! Nice pick back in 2008 Bannen! Looks like nobody here regged the name and MakerBot hand registered it less than a year later. Now registered in 91 extensions. I wonder if they would have picked the same name had it not been free to register at the time
