A bank in every pocket?
Nov 15th 2007
From The Economist print edition

Banking on mobile phones holds promise, provided regulators are willing to be flexible

THE idea that mobile phones bring economic benefits is now widely accepted. In places with bad roads, few trains and parlous land lines, they substitute for travel, allow price data to be distributed more quickly and easily, enable traders to reach wider markets and generally ease the business of doing business. Leonard Waverman of the London Business School has estimated that an extra ten mobile phones per 100 people in a typical developing country leads to an extra half a percentage point of growth in GDP per person. To realise the economic benefits of mobile phones, governments in such countries need to do away with state monopolies, issue new licences to allow rival operators to enter the market and slash taxes on handsets. With few exceptions (hallo, Ethiopia), they have done so, and mobile phones are now spreading fast, even in the poorest parts of the world.

As mobile phones have spread, a new economic benefit is coming into view: using them for banking (see article), and so improving access to financial services, not just telecoms networks. Pioneering m-banking projects in the Philippines, Kenya and South Africa show the way. These “branchless” schemes typically allow customers to deposit and withdraw cash through a mobile operator's airtime-resale agents, and send money to other people via text messages that can be exchanged for cash by visiting an agent. Workers can then be paid by phone; taxi-drivers and delivery-drivers can accept payments without carrying cash around; money can be easily sent to friends and family. A popular use is to deposit money before making a long journey and then withdraw it at the other end, which is safer than carrying lots of cash.

Case 2)

In Europe there are pilot studies being done with using mobile phone to pay for groceries. Where mobile phone replaces debit cards. Found an interesting video on youtube that demonstrates this NFC technology. From a pilot study done in Netherlands.

From Sub-Saharan Africa to Western Europe; is mobile phone fastly becoming a portable bank in every pocket?

Hmm. Interesting.

Thanks for nice funding. Bankaccount.mobi last I checked was at 560 and ending today or couple hours from now. Find the name cheap. To bad the owner is selling at these low levels

I own a few terms. Like 401kaccount, iraaccount and others

I think banking, financial, quotes will be powerful on mobi

Very nice find. Makes me want to hold out for more cash lol

Happy thanksgiving everyone.

16 hours and a few minutes left.

Got upped to 610.00 bucks.

I am expecting some heavy bidding will come in last few minutes of auction. If I was liquid I would be bidding upwards of 1200.00 bucks for this nice gem.

This is interesting.

I grabbed bankportal.mobi and was only extension that was open. I own bankhub.mobi as well. Think these 2 names are pretty brandable.

Then I grabbed more account names like 403baccount.mobi, mortgageaccount.mobi which I was shocked on.

I really love forex and futures. Forexaccount.mobi, futuresaccount.mobi were taken. I can live with that after this funding. Wallstreetaccount.com and all extensions wide open. So I grabbed the .com and .mobi and maybe the .net. Then I did another hedge and grabbed wallstreetaccounts.com and .mobi. Everyone knows wallstreet even the non investor. People that are in the market understand forex and futures but ask a common non investor and chances are they would be clueless. Was just shocked that the biggest name was free. Sure its long but very brandable. Then I grabbed brokerageaccount.mobi as well. Shocked that was free. Tiny bit of this reminds me of my forexoptions.mobi brandable name and great pitch to a forex firm down the road. Got some heat, attacks by this and, deleted comments by me and others. Couple people liked it

I believe banking, financial, doex, loans, etc will do well. I have always thought this and this write up and link supports it even more.

Whoever grabbed 401k.mobi, 403b.mobi and there just sitting at godaddy your going be well rewarded. First these type of terms will do great then I believe account.mobi will do just fine. It won't get the big bucks like forex.mobi, futures.mobi or stocks.mobi but I should do fine in 3 years. I may post these on sedo and how reception is on them that bankaccount.mobi is heating up some.

After reading this and tip I really appreciate it. Go mobi as I write on my crackberry and namepros.mobi.

When I get back I will give you some np dollars. Thanks again. The namepros.mobi area on this takes forever and easier to do on laptop.

I am a happy camper at 315 am lol

A nice article on mobile banking. That is where my domain BranchLocator.mobi could fit. It also could fit virtually any other kind of branches, not necessarily bank branches.

Banklocator.mobi

I love that

I am done buying. As I stepped outside for a smoke I was thinking loanaccount.mobi. I came back inn and that was free! Double happy now. I grabbed it.

I am done buying lol.

That name of yours really is amazing

I would check if

Loanlocator.mobi
Cashlocator.mobi
Atmlocator.mobi

Even atmaccount.mobi looks good.

I am done buying. Wife would shoot me if I buy more. Time for a breather and now park them and see how traffic does or maybe do a quick flip on one or 2 names. Not sure yet.

God, I wish I had some play around cash to get that bankaccount.mobi or 401k.mobi. I am sure the names I mention someone owns them here. Blue horse shoe loves 401k.mobi and bankaccount.mobi.

Oops. Branchlocator. Like it. Check if banklocator is open.

I check atmaccount.mobi and had to grab it sorry. Couldn't resist.

Yeah agreed. It can mean not being mugged cash in the pocket on the long & perilous joruney to marketplace as alluded to in the article in case 1) above.

Before I knew about mobi names, and didn't have much awareness about how wireless mobile is affecting the world-beyond my own phone(am embarrassed to say). I'd probably would ask..,'If a country lacks in most all forms of basic amenities like Health Care, Education System, and people are subsiting on unregulated Informal Economy, would mobile be that important?' But, My view have changed. This can get ppl of these nations in to Formal Economy- "in the game". And chance to break the catch-twenty-two cycle and the chance to get other basic infrastructures developed.

I thought the video on Netherlands' NFC grocery shopping was interesting. Wonder when I'll get to grocery shop & pay w/my mobile phone here in the US. LOL
