Backordering situation and questions

Okay, so there's a domain that I want. I mean, if it expires I have to have it. It's ten years old and was last updated in winter 2006. It's a generic single word domain with no content (not even parked). When do people usually renew their domain names? It expires mid april, so in like two months.

Based off of that, when would you backorder the domain? I don't want to backorder unless it's likely it won't be renewed.

Which brings me to my next question: where do you backorder? Where's best? Can I backorder at more than one backordering service to give me better odds of acquiring the domain name?

Thanks!

Hi I'll try to help you.

When do people usually renew their domain names?
Most people nowdays have auto-renewal option enabled to it automatically renews at least for the good names.

Based off of that, when would you backorder the domain? I don't want to backorder unless it's likely it won't be renewed.
You can backorder it now if you wish. And when you backorder it you won't pay anything unless you get it or you are the highest bidder so you can try.

where do you backorder?
If you really want domain then you backorder at all companies one of them will most likely get it.

Where's best?
SnapNames is one of the best imo.

Can I backorder at more than one backordering service to give me better odds of acquiring the domain name?
Yes, that's at least what you can do :)

most likely that domain will be renewed. i can not imagine that 10 years old one word domain can be possibly dropped.

First it depends on the registrar. Some registrars will send their expiring names to snap or namejet etc before they drop them.

There are still LLL .com dropping from time to time but less often :)

The reason I asked when people renew is because I want an idea of if this domain has past the average renew date (XX days before expiration). How soon is a domain typically autorenewed before expiration? Once I have a good idea that the name should have been renewed by whenever, then I want to backorder it.

If more than one person backorders a domain it goes to auction, right? Is there anywhere that doesn't have mandatory auctions? Any strategies to avoid having to bid against it?

It's a .net, so that is being considered. I know the .com will never be dropped. But the .net has no content except a coming soon message that's been there for ages, so I'm hoping the owners forgotten about it or not working with domains anymore.

Again it depends where the name is registered.
For example if the name is with network solutions it will first land at namejet where you have the opportunity to bid on it. It's possible you will have competition. There is no real way around this.
Some registrars will release the name and it will enter redemption status and finally drop. In that case it's a good idea to place a backorder with snapnames, pool, possibly godaddy (but don't expect good results).
Again, if there are other bidders the name will be awarded to the highest bidder.

If it's already well past renewal date it's a sign it may have been abandoned and could be available soon.
Which registrar is it BTW ?

Thanks for the reply. It's currently registered with GoDaddy.

It should land at tdnam.com.

Which means it'll be auctioned then, right? But only if more than one person backorder it? What if a different backordering service gets it?

If the name is at gd it should automatically be made available at tdnam upon expiry, if no-one bites then it would drop. It's possible other parties will be interested so you will be bidding against them and the name would be awarded to the highest bidder.
As long as it's not dropped you need not be concerned about backordering elsewhere.

Probably SnapNames.com, but better backorder everywhere if you really want the domain.

Backorder at every possibility & keep searching, searching, searching..

There was a name i wanted bad, I offered the owner 2K and he told be he wanted at least 20K.

Then one day I see it in Tdnam, I was shocked I had to look at it over and over.
I got it for 250 bucks, parked it and made 200 to 300 per month for a couple years then sold it for 8K.

Damn. So since it's with godaddy it'll go to tdnam once expired and almost certainly be auctioned off. And if it isn't bid on, then it drops.

This is a rather sticky situation then. Should I contact the owner and see if they'd be interested in selling? it's a valuable domain, but I don't exactly have deep pockets.

So my options are:

1) Contact the current owner and negotiate to buy the domain name, hopefully for less than it would otherwise go for at auction. (if so, how should I approach the buyer?)

2) I wait for it to expire and bid on it at TDNAM since it's regged with Godaddy.

3) I hope (foolishly and impossibly) that it won't get bid on and then backorder it (which makes zero sense).

Any other options? Would you wait for it to expire if the owner doesn't renew and take chances bidding or contact the owner?

If the name is past expiry date => watch for it at tdnam, if the name is renewed => approach the owner and be prepared to make decent offer.

^ I suppose that's the most logical. But I'm afraid if it goes to tdnam the auction price will run way higher than my budget. At TDNAM I'd be bidding against more people. If I contact the seller, it's just me and him.

How does backordering work with Godaddy? If i backorder with godaddy does it go to tdnam? I'm a little confused in that aspect.

Thanks!
