well the snaps and pools of this world (the ones that auction the domains) are the only ones that are gonna catch you anything decent in .com and .net

Yep, If you want the name, you're going to have to deal with Snapnames, Pool or Enom. They all use a post-catch auction system.

There is much less competition at Enom if they catch the name.

Does anyone have experience using domain snap programs? I know there is one advertised on JustDropped that lets you use your reseller API to continuously attempt to register the domain. Are these bogus or can they actually work?

Interesting Alternative

My list is:
1 - Pool
2 - SnapNames
3 - Enom/ClubDrop
4 - GoDaddy (for .us only)
5 - A NamePros member that backorder domains for U$15. Yes, he does get some good ones, sorry I forgot his name, can update later. No later auction.

Yes, sadly most of them put your name later on auction. If you are out for competitive names there is no way to avoid the big ones, the chances are enormous that they will get it before any individual.

Is there any alternative? Yes!

A Domain Snap Program, like the one mentioned by Slipxaway advertised at JustDropped is one. However, as far as I know, that program is too basic and could be much well improved by a skilled programmer (if you are one, please let me know).

My opinion is that we Should bother because if I can snap a domain for free (after the cost of that software) instead of paying U$60 or who knows how much in an auction, sure, we Should bother. Also, those big players have thousands of domains backordered at any given time so their resources, even astonishingly superior to ours, would be spread among all those thousands of domains. So, chances are that your domain is not in their "Priority List" when they devote more resources for specific domains.

Better scenario? Use that software, preferably improved, AND use all those Backorder services above.

Your chances are that you WILL get it! Perhaps for free!

;)

i thought namewinner was game over

pool used to be the big dog but i think it is definitely snap nowaways

and as for GD on .us, i would rate GD backordered no.1 on .us names but wouldnt even put them on a list for .com or .net

there is bluehill.com aswell

You're right. I havent used them for a long time. Updated.

Never used BlueHill, though.

Thanks.

I think the chances are extremely low, don't forget, loads of names are not actually getting "snapped" at all - they are getting "passed" from the register to their drop partner. (ie: snapnames, Pool etc)

You're absolutely right, Gazzip.

For competitive domains this is exactly the case, and exactly what I just said in another thread "What Time Domains Drop" at http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/264285-what-time-of-day-domains-drop.html

However, not all domains are competitive domains, some are valuable, due to a number of reasons, for a few people (you/your client and your competitors/your client competitors in your/their specific industry?) so the one who check it first may get it first...

And, if I can avoid high fees where a software can pay itself by just avoiding to buy 2/3 domains by the minimum price with the big players, why not?

No doubt a good reason for trying.
