Backordering.. does it work?

I had been watching quicktraffic.com since early this week, eagerly waiting its expiration date. Yesterday came and went slowly. I decided it would probably be best if I backorder the domain (through GoDaddy) to make sure I get it because I knew I could atleast get back the extra backorder fee. This morning when I hopped on the computer, I was disappointed to see the domain had been registered by someone else.. (NEONIC OY?)

This is my first backorder attempt and has failed.. and wondering whether or not it is worth it in the future. (and maybe a description of this NEONIC OY that got the domain before I did as there was no website or contact information included.. just the company name.)

Yes, backordering works. Some quick things to remember....

*The better the name, the more people trying to grab it, the less the odds are that you will get it. Only 1 person can win, and that means a bunch of others are going to walk away feeling frustrated. Don't let it bother you. Just move on to the next one.

*Some places (like GoDaddy) will only accept one order per name, but other places (Pool, Snapnames etc.) will allow multiple users to backorder the same name, and then (if they secure the domain) have a short auction between those parties, with the highest bid winning. This can get very expensive; way beyond the standard backorder fee.

*If the name is something you really want, it's a wise move to backorder at more than one place. Many of them do not charge unless they get the name for you. Others charge upfront, but let you move the backorder to a different name if they fail to catch the original one.

*Unfortunately for some, places like Pool and Snapames do not accept PayPal. You must have a credit card.

To be continued.... (if not by me, then somebody else coming along in the thread)

Thanks for the information.

A credit card is no problem :P

I am curious how the speed of the domain snatching works. Are some registrars faster than others at snatching a domain for someone who has backordered it?

I wouldn't recommend GoDaddy for backordering. I bought one backorder package and it's applicable for a year. The only thing is I tried to backorder about 25 domains and GoDaddy couldn't get one. I know some people might of had good experience with them but to me their a horrible domain backorder company.

I have not had much success with GoDaddy backorders but have got several domains from Pool as well as eNom Club Drop. The only problem is that they are expensive compared to GoDaddy.
