Backorder systems

I've searched to see if this has been discussed before, but couldnt find anything.

How does the professional backorder systems (like pool, snapnames and namewinner) work? What I'm wondering about is how the the technical parts behind the service work. I mean, is it all about keeping a database with the domain names together with expiration/delete time & dates and when it occurs just send "a lot" of registration attempts somewhere and hope for the best?

If a domain for some reason is dropped before the earlier listed time/date, would the snapback systems notice that?

Does for instance Pool and Namewinner have their own snapback systems to do this or do they use several other external systems, that attempts to register the domains, to do the real work for them?

Anyone knows anything about this? Would be interesting to know...

The professional backorder companies have the following advantages over you and me:

1. As ICANN-accredited registrars, they each have several dedicated connections to the com/net registry that allow them to register thousands of names per second. The most successful ones (like Pool, SN, and NW) pay other smaller registrars for the right to use their dedicated connections.

People like us are usually limited by the registrars to checking one domain per second, if that.

2. Pre-drop activity at Pool and NW allow them to establish which names will be most in demand, and so prioritize accordingly.

OK, I see. Thanks for you reply.

Then it wouldnt be impossible to win a name that is a bit less in demand?

Would it be possible to develop some kind of p2p software to let small actors work together and use eachothers possibilities to check since its not very likely that everyone wants a name at the same time (not all the time anyway). This could also be used together with some queing algorithm or something? Just a thought, but I might not have enough knowledge to realise what's possible and what's not :)

btw, what do you explicitly mean with "checking a domain"? how is that technically done in the fastest and most reliable way?

Your correct, more of the high demand domains are partically the hardest to backorder. However some people have had some luck doing so.

anyone technically knowledgeable enough to see if it would be possible to do some p2p program for this? or would it be too insecure?

otherwise it would be quite nice if all the NP ppl worked together to be able to win backorders against the big ones :D

I do like that idea :)

I use a script to try and grab dropping domains through Enom, am starting to use several scripts each to a different reseller account at Enom and from different servers to try and get round the 1 query a second rule.

Would be great if a script could be developed that allows groups of users to do this. However I don't see much difference in just getting a group of people that run scripts together and all using the same base list.

There again, whilst you might double your chances of grabbing a domain, you also halve the amount you would earn :)

Interesting idea though.

All the best

well, my idea was to let people use eachothers connection to check for a specific domain in a more automatic way instead of handling it all manually and thereby without the need of individual contact between all of the involved persons.

the queuing system that I mentioned could also work as a restriction against abusing the system, i.e. at most a couple of backorders at the same time per person, first one to apply for a domain through the system would be the one that got the domain, that is, no splitting between the ones that are using the system.

I see what you mean now, will think about it a bit more.

okay, do so, and then let me hear the result of your thoughts :)

Why don't we create a group who's purpose is to grab domains with scripts? If we are successful in grabbing and selling them, we will split the profits together.

Think that would need quite much administration and a lot of trust in eachother. That's why my suggestion was to join the resources with every registration attempt but the one who initiated the registration will also win the domain.

If everyone works together to get for example xx.com, me.com, casino.com or whatever, and it's successful. Is it realistic to demand a sale just to be able to split the profit?

edit: fixed typo

If we do form a group, we might have to create a guideline stating a realistic timetable for selling the domain. I'm thinking 30 to 60 days.

yeah, well. I think, as I said, that it needs quite much administration. in my opinion, a software that handles it would be easier.

but well, its possible with several solutions :)
