Hello,
A little over a year ago I purchased a domain name that had an automotive manufacturer's name in it. I bought it in an auction and spent quite a few pennies to get it. At that time I owned one of the largest, and fastest growing forums for one of this manufacturer's best selling vehicles. I was going to use this keyword domain name to promote that site even more.
The domain name is descriptive, not a name that people would necessarily mistake for the company.
Anyways, several months since after I purchased the domain name, the manufacturer contacted me with a "surrender the name or else" letter. I went back and forth with the lawyer representing the manufacturer and explained to her that I was not a squatter, and that everything that I had done for them had only benefited them.
After going back and forth and explaining my case, and also stating that I should at the very least be paid what I paid for the domain name(written more tactfully in the letter) she said that she would talk to the manufacturer and get back with me ASAP. It has now been almost a year and I have not heard anything back from them. I gather that they tried to scare me, and that since I ran one of the largest communities for one of their largest selling vehicles, they backed off and left me alone.
To finish, I'm no longer the owner of that community, I have no use for the domain name anymore, but another relevant, community owner would be interested in buying it if I would sell. Am I free to do this? Do I have to make sure that the new buyer knows the situation, etc? I especially want to get my rather large investment out of this domain name.
Sorry for the long post. Its sometimes hard to get that much info in a little space. :td:
