What is AR?
AR stands for augmented reality and as the name suggests, it augments or adds to the real environment. This is done via spatial displays on clear glasses ie. AR glasses. Essentially, it’s like seeing projected 3D objects or displays in our real world.

Importance of AR
AR is considered as more of a game changer than virtual reality (VR). You see, VR technology involves the use of a virtual environment, which is very limiting with regards to real-world interactions. Unsurprisingly, VR technology is usually restricted to entertainment applications like movies and games. As for AR, it works with the real environment that we reside in and doesn’t restrict our interaction with the real world. Thus, it has vast applications in our everyday lives.

Applications of AR
Lots of applications and some of them are already in use today.
  • Military: Heads-Up Display (HUD) that displays critical data such as altitude, airspeed and targets to the fighter pilot
  • Navigation: Advanced GPS navigation system that superimposes directional arrows on the road itself, making it easier to focus on the road while driving.
  • Tourism: Anchoring interesting facts in the form of 3D speech bubbles to important physical landmarks
  • Medical: Carrying out surgical procedures with the aid of AR tech that display markers for incision area with helpful info such as blade recommendation, patient’s vitals, etc, in the top corner of the AR glasses’ display
  • Advertising: Anchoring animated 3D info bubbles about promotions and deals to the front of the store to attract customers
  • Education: Learning would be more interactive, hands-on and of course, fun
  • Entertainment: AR porn :P Imagine having your fav pornstar projected onto your own bed lol Not forgetting, you can also play AR games where the characters are superimposed onto your surroundings

I could go on and on. Essentially, AR technology bridges the gap between an increasingly digitised world with our real, physical world. In the future, I imagine everyone would be wearing AR glasses of some sort. No, not for fun or entertainment. Instead, it would be an essential wear for us, just to go about our everyday lives. We would get used to the convenience that it offers and simply can’t go a day without it. Imagine stepping out of your house and as you glance at the sky, you see the weather forecast for the day being displayed with helpful advice to bring an umbrella. Then as you’re about to close the front door, you get a helpful reminder to check whether you’ve brought your wallet/purse, keys and phone with you. At the train station, you see an info pop-up telling you when the next train is coming. And so on. Our world would be annotated with various 3D objects and information bubbles that can only be seen with AR glasses. Yes, Google Glass will go mainstream. Of course, other brands will introduce theirs too. Honestly, as someone who doesn’t wear glasses, I’m not really looking forward to this lol but I guess, we just have to get used to the idea of wearing it. Otherwise, we would be left behind. Yeah, we’re gonna get tied to our AR glasses instead of our smartphone. After all, the screen is already on our glasses. And yes, we’ll interact with the interface via voice commands, just like the Google Glass.

So, when AR glasses go mainstream, we’ll be shopping for them online, just like any IT gadget. We’ll be checking out their prices, quality and user reviews. That’s where this domain will come in handy for you ;) It’d be a comparison and review site for all the popular models of AR glasses on the market. Revenue would come from affiliate sales (Amazon, BestBuy, etc) and also from advertising, especially since the traffic would likely be sizeable.
