Are Too Many Backlinks Harmful?

I'm new in the field of SEO and I remember reading an article sometime ago which said that too many backlinks created by the webmaster (on blogs, forums,etc) is harmful to the site's ranking. Is this true? Can too many backlinks from the same source harm the site's ranking in search engines?

It might raise some flags. Sometimes I see threads here with like 2000 links in a few days kind of thing and people are pretty much hurting themselves getting into that nonsense. It's the kind of links I usually have to delete when they're spamming my Wordpress blogs. And it will for sure raise some flags when they're from forums, blogs etc because it doesn't follow a natural linking pattern. How many sites (and usually garbage sites at that) get that many links in that short of time? Not too many. There are times a site will get press or something and get a lot of links in but usually from sites that Google knows, might have a little authority etc.

A few good quality links > better that some of the stuff I see being sold.

Whether it hurts, that's up for debate. But probably those links are very discounted. You have to ask all the people that buy those links here about their traffic afterwards, their rankings etc.

This is good advice, another point to add is that it depends on the age of the domain that you own. Usually the older the better.

Spam links from bad neighborhoods can actually hurt your rankings.

I never think about this question before. But after you ask it, I remembered an article saying that too many backlinks are harmful only if they are illegal. Since we just do regular seo, I think it will be ok.

Adding unusually large amount of backlinks in a short time will cause problems, will be seen as spam/trying to game the system.

Yeah if they backlinks increasing everyday very fast so i have heard it can harm your ranking. Just work balance.

No. Too many backlinks from the same source or any source doesn't harm. Just one tip, instead of getting 10 low quality links, get 1 backlink from authority website.

I do not think that it is harm full. I mean if all the links are coming from relevant sites then it is helpful. if you also get so many back links in short amount of time then it is harm full. these kinds of back links can be achieved by buying links ...

There is no absolute number, but think about the search engines, they want to know you are real and not spammer. This is why 1000 links are ok is its 3 new ones a day and not if its 1000 once

Building a lot of links for a site will never harm a site, except if its coming through spamming site or by using any black hat SEO Methods.

Doesn't Google have some kind of backlink monitoring system, may just be a rumour but I was told if google detects you as having to many fake backlinks you'll get unindexed, any truth to this?

Too many is not bad as long as they don't come up all of a sudden on a brand new domain. Search engines tend to sandbox such sites.
Also if the backlinks are spammed around, then later maybe in the future they might be deleted and your rank may drop.
Also link exchange is also not too useful.
Try going for quality over quantity.

You can bet on it a new website coming out of the gate with an abnormal amount of links you can get punished. How Google thinks is too much for a new home? I have no idea. add 5 to 10 months may be normal, depending on your website and how the traffic is. But the answer is essentially yes, too many links, whatever that number will get you punished.
