in my opinion it depends how you are going to use it. Hopefully you are not going to sell them on that domain. I also do not like hyphens. But if you are only going for an exact match for development of an informational site you might be ok.

resale would not be over reg fee imho

I like .org too, it's got a unique combination of attributes; 1) Value, 2) Ageing, 3) Acceptance, 4) Penetration and 5) Brand Goodwill, and 6) Gravitas. I can't think of any uses where I'd prefer the .net to .com, but there are alot of instances where .org is preferable; not for profit, charity, professional bodies, associations, government, politics, campaigns. Something like microwave-oven doesn't work, it's OK for an SEO minisite but the keyword and extension are like chalk and cheese.

I don't think you can say that a .net. .org, or .info is worth a certain % of a .com. .net is probably the closest of the three to being a fixed % because like .com, goodness of fit isn't particularly critical. With .org and .info, fit is more important.

I'm biased because I paid alot of money for it, but I'd rather hold Rates.info than Rates.org or Rates.net because people want information on rates, it's not an organisation or network concept. If there is a not for profit element, I'd opt for the .org. For example, I just bought BuildingSociety.org and switched a site I was developing on Savings.info so I could cover building society mortgage rates as well as savings rates. I wanted the .org because building societies are not for profit organisations in the UK so the fit with .org was perfect.

If I was developing a generic single word site selling a product, I'd opt for the .net because it's more credible. So I'd choose Diamond.net over Diamond.org or Diamond.info. Diamond doesn't fit .org because it's a commercial product and Diamond.info implies you are providing information on cut or clarity rather than selling a diamond. It's difficult to say Diamond.net is worth a certain % of the $7.5m Diamond.com sold for because there is a strategic and esteem value to owning diamond.com but little of either in owning the .net.

On two occasions, I have bought the .com, .net, and .org of a keyword at the same time. On both occasions I paid more for the .org than the .net and about three times as much for the .com as the .org. However, the keywords "DearlyBeloved" and "ImpossibleDream" were emotive and brandable rather than generic and worked well with .org.

For generics .coms I've bought, I didn't pursue the .net or .org. I would reg them or catch them or even buy them cheap on a forum but my buying limit would be a couple of hundred bucks irrespective of how much the .com cost. I would be far more likely to pursue the plural .com of the singular or vice versa because that's where I see the biggest strategic benefit. The difference in desirability between category .coms like Diamond.com and diamond in any other extension is so big, it's difficult to fix it as a %, De Beers will always want to own for Diamond.com but Diamond.net is second best and it could actually damage their brand to own it.

Other category .coms like Wine.com and Wines.com have sold for similar sums and it seems there is an interesting tug or war between owning the category killer which favours the singular and owning the better domain for SEO purposes which is usually the plural.

.com is about overture, PPC, and working out what keywords will attract buyers who have to have it at any price like Diamond.com and Vodka.com. Alternative extensions are about fit. It's like buying a suit, if you can't afford the best .com material, at least get it made bespoke, that way it will still look expensive and be sought after. I bought several .infos with this logic including Rates.info, Prices.info, Coupons.info, and Savings.info. Then I started looking for a better tailor and discovered .pro. .pro produces exceptional fits like Golf.pro and Poker.pro which semantically trump their .net, .org, and .info equivalents.
