I recently snagged an expiring domain name from TDNAM, and today I got an email from someone asking if I would be willing to sell. The person is actually a representative for the end user I was considering contacting myself.

I am new at this and didn't expect to get approached so soon, so my question is, how would I go about selling?

Of course I would negotiate a price, but is there a 3rd party that I should go through as far as payment..or should I just use paypal or something of the like?

Also I was wondering if, since I recently(like in the last week) acquired the name, if I would still be able to the account transfer or if I am locked into the 60 day thing.

Thanks for any replies.

----Shane

Shane, you are able to push the domain name to another Godaddy account, so that is not an issue. My recommendation would be to consult the appraisals section but make sure you seperate the domain name from the tld - example

Abc.com

post as:

abc <.> com - something to this effect, this way it wont get indexed in the search engines that way.

Also, know about the person your selling before you start talking price. Its a tricky game, in this case, you may want to discuss this with a broker to find an appropriate price.

good luck and congrats,
Justin

Look for comparable sales if you can find them based on the following:
1) Number of letters if it is short
2) Similar names in the same industry if it is a decent keyword
3) Check the number of backlinks and whether those relate to the company purchasing the domain
4) Check and see how many hits the site gets from the backlinks and how much you can earn in parkign revenue which is likely to deteriorate over time, but might as well know what it can generate with little or no effort

I would use a service if you are knew at this and do not know the person/company. In the end, you will not transfer the name until you have verified funds...just make sure you have verified funds.

Shane - search "appraisal scam" here - I almost inevitably get an email from them after a TDNAM win, and it's a mistake you can avoid with a little proper education.
Not saying that is what you are facing, but just be on the safe side.

How could you be so sure?

Thanks everyone for the replies. The hard part I'm facing at the moment is trying to figure out how much to sell it for.

Its only really perfect match is as a 5 letter acronym for the end user association currently wanting to buy. So its really gonna come down to what they are willing to pay for it. I asked for them to make an offer, but they said it would be easier if I stated how much I would sell it for. :|

How could you be so sure?

The person that emailed me is listed on their current website on the board of directors.

The person that emailed me is listed on their current website on the board of directors.

That doesn't mean anything, did you email the person back to a free email account? or a company email account?

And I always get nervous that they could be hoping you ask for some obscene amount of money (UDRP-bait) - but without knowing the name, we obviously can't weigh the relative risks there.

The end user that I was initially going approach myself to sell the name has a current website with a list of the members of the board of directors with names, email addresses etc.
The person that emailed me asking if I was willing to sell, didn't mention the organization name or ask me to use any kind of appraisal method. He just asked if I was willing to sell.
I checked on the site of the end user that I had thought of contacting and the same person with the same email is listed on the board of directors, and its not a free email account.

I'm pretty positive it isn't a scam.

Well, what does the website look like. Does it look like they have gobs ($xx,xxx) of money? You might also register the .net and .org in case they walk away.

Hmm well I hope not....though I'm not planning on trying to rip them off, its not really a special name or anything.. it would most likely be appraised here for reg fee. Only worth what someone will pay.
They should have bid the expired name auction I was the only bidder :|

Naw its actually a non-profit org...but like I said I'm not trying to rip them off or charge them an arm and leg.....but at the same time I myself am not non profit :hehe:

After looking at their site, anything over a low to mid $xxx figure might send them on their way, I'm afraid.
Best of luck to you, and let us know how it turns out.

sounds scammish to me

look under fraud/scam threads

I'd be careful with this. Although the contact was made and you found a name on the site make sure you use an escrow service or put it up at auction with a decent reserve. Sure you have to pay a small commission but in a case like this it would be worth it.

just my 4 cents,

Congratz I'm just extra cautious. When I hear stuff. Chapel = paranoid umm maybe. But someone trying a scam on me, is actually how I stumbled on to this business.

But that's another story.
