I just read this article about organic in germany~
Organic food in demand
France and Spain are clear leaders in the field, but German farmers have been devoting larger and larger shares of their fields to organic products. Last year, the number of farms focusing on organic farming grew by more than 100 to 537, and the amount land devoted to organic produce increased by another 2.2 percent, according to the agricultural institute ZMP.
"Organic products have always been in demand," in Germany, said Peter Krentz, an organic farmer outside of Berlin. "But the growth has come from the increasing awareness of the consumer."
Abcert, a German company that certifies organic farmland according to European Union standards, has appealed to farmers to go organic in order to benefit from the boom. Batteries of organic stores are opening across Germany, including a two-story one in Berlin claiming to be the capital's largest. Even discount supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi have devoted areas of their stores for sales of products organically grown. Despite no real change in wages, Germans spent 18 percent more money in 2006 on organic products.
