Application environment

i have a question. i have an idea for an application (it would sort media files on your computer, hopefully more intuitively than iTunes). i think it would be best to code it in java, since it could then be used on Mac and Windows XP, but would java be the best way to go? if i didn't use java, what other environment would you recommend?
