A 20 year old domain with an extensive history, it has tens of thousands of backlinks, you can use ahrefs.com to get some insight and archive.org is helpful too. The buyer is probably seo.domains as they hoover up these type of domains. There is a small chance that the domain was bought by someone hoping to sell it back to the former owner, or potentially a competitor, but most likely, it's due to the ~50k backlinks.

For skillsmatter.com specifically, it is linked to from Wikipedia.org articles (e.g: Behavior-driven development) so it is the gold standard in SEO domains.

They're not a traditional domain name investor so the price isn't based on how much they can sell the domain for, it is based on how much value they can realise from it through their various platforms for building backlinks. For a domain with such a strong backlink profile, it is worth at least $70k to them. I can think of a few domains they've paid $25k+ for recently[1] so I think $70k for this domain (considering how high ranking it is) is very plausible. That said, they aren't the only game in town, it could be someone else, after all, there had to be at least 2 bidders involved, but certainly within the realms of possibility that they bought it.
