I was contacted by these guys and they have a nice homepage which looks pretty official. But what concerns me is that the email wound-up in my spam box. So it is already to answer, but it sounds to me like they may be scamming me.

Here is what they wrote...

Dear (Insert Trademark Name):

We are Beijing Onvis Network Information Technology Co.,Ltd, which is the domain name register center in China. We received a formal application from a company who is called ShengBan Investment(China) Co.,Ltd are applying to register”(Insert Trademark Name)" as their domain name and Internet keyword on 6th Jan 2008. Because this involved your company name or trade marks so we inform you in no time. If you considered these domain names and internet keywords are important to you and there was necessary to protect them by registering them first, contact us soon.

Kind Regards,

David yang

So, it looks like they are just trying to drum up business with spam to me. BUT, I would rather register this mark myself than allow anyone else to.

Still, it has been over 10 days since it arrived in my spam box, as I just found it there, and (Insert Trademark Name).cn and (Insert Trademark Name).com.cn are still available.

SPAM/SCAMN, right?

Looks legit, until you read that:

Sounds like a spam/scam to me. How would they know someone tried to register those domains unless they actually did register them? And what does the registrar do, prevent every possible TM name from being registered? And why wouldn't the person trying to register the domains just go to another registrar and have already registered them?

I've never heard of any registrar preventing registrations based on a "possible" TM issue and then taking the time to contact the TM owner to inform them :)

Yeah, I thought it was a scam as well, not even going to bother responding to it. I bet that's why it wound-up in my spam box anyway, the spam filters recognize the scam.

Thanks for your reassurances! -Doug
