Anyone a Camera-Phile? I'm deciding b/n two; would appreciate advice (Canon v. Nikon)

Stats wise they seem so similar, but the rabid folks on both sides of the Nikon/Canon debate routinely convince me of the supremacy of one, only to have me change my mind yet again.

The specifics of what I'll be using this for: Travel where I do not think the camera will be making it back in one piece, so this is somewhat of a "one way ticket" camera, hence I'm really not looking to go any higher in price (And not looking at the 1D, etc.).

Any advice or great resources you would swear by?

Both are fairly expensive for "I don't think the camera will be making it back in one piece"

Unless you are getting paid for covering this place ;)

Why not go with one of the lower cost ones, Nikon has some beauts for real cheap prices like $200-$300. Like the L series.

Btw, Amazon is inaccessible... could they be down ???

Hmmm... Amazon was working when I originally posted, and is working now for me as well. Could have been an isolated issue for you ;)

The photos need to come out well, so I really need to go with an SLR option (Already have other SLR lenses that I might throw on either one depending on where things fall, or I might be buying some cheaper SLR lenses to take with me for different situations...).

I'd choose Nikon over Canon any day.. at least in the old days, the optics were clearly superior to most other cameras, except the Leica (you can't go wrong with a Leica BTW)

Yeah, but if you're disposing the Leica, let me know, I'll come, even to the deepest jungles of the Amazon.

Nikon is where it's at for pro's.
Though a lot of people choose canon nowadays, I'll stick with my nikons...

And, yes, it was a problem with my connection...though how the reply was posted is beyond me.

I love Nikons, but their "non-professional" digitals have a history of tending to blow out highlights. Nothing more annoying than seeing that big line against the right edge of the histogram!

Don't know if they've addressed that in the D40x, I think it was still a problem in the D40.

I own nothing but Nikons and they work great. I'm currently using a D50 and I've taken just over 6000 pictures.

Excellent choice, good luck with your adventure!
Are you allowed to say where you are going or is that a state secret?

BTW, do remember to carry extra batteries and memory, you just might run out and not get them later, which would be a shame. I normally carry one set of batteries for every 500 photos (with flash).

In any case, would love to look at the photos you took! :) I'm going to get around to scanning all my images from the Nikon D70s (film based) I own. I've also recently bought a Nikon D50 and a Nikon Coolpix L10 (so that my kid, all of 4yrs and 8mths, can take photographs too).
