It is interesting that domain extensions are so seemingly
unimportant in Domain sales unless it is the Holy ".COM". Each new
extension seems like an entire city in the New World of Internet
Marketing. I believe the development of these name extensions is
much like the belief in the 19th century that Florida was
uninhabitable swamp land. Well, it was. But with proper
development it became prime real estate. We are striving to market
the name FL.AG. We even have a website up at that location and we
are selling it on Sedo. Check Whois. We are Charta Publishing.
This is our first advent into the world of domain sales. We have
purchased many names over the years for development, but not for
resale.
IT becomes clear that the market is bound by very conservative
notions of what worked last week. Innovation seems lacking. How
long will it be before the ICANN does away with extensions all
together? With the speed of the name process changing to
something.anything looming within a few years, the development of
certain extensions like the campaign for .ws seems very intriguing,
Certain one word combinations can be created as we did with FL.AG.
Yet any extension, has the potential development when the public
becomes aware of the need to only put the dot in the right place.
Browsers will soon be able to detect that for you. Requiring you
to only write a name correctly and the extension divider will fill
the dot in for you. With that in mind, clever names can be devised
from any extension. The speculation on these names opens an entire
area of locations with easy recognizable names and short easy
words, difficult to misspell.
If, that is the way the world is going, then true pioneers, real
speculators should not be so cynical about the process, but work
diligently to popularize the entire concept. Much like convincing
leary Americans during the 19th century that Florida swamp land
could have any future potential. In the business of the internet
there are no jungles to clear nor railroads to build. What took
100 years of speculation by a few pioneers in the 19th century
takes 100 days of development in the virtual world.
Our FL.AG has generated little interest, so far, as we have tried to sell it
and some fairly negative comments in the forums. A few, however,
seem to see the vision and of course, just owning a name will not
asure a profit potential. But development of the name and
particularly the extension is what pioneers do. Gold was
discovered in California not because anyone knew it was there in
1848, but because pioneering developers saw potential in a remote
area and through much risk and work alas, found GOLD.
Anyway, I am up early and wanted a little rant time before I start
working on my Railroad into the wilderness. I believe there is
Gold in them there hills but perhaps the body of my work will just
be another marker on the side of the trail found by other travelers
whenever they venture this direction. I have seen scattered
remains of some who went before. It is a little lonely our here. I
still have my dreams. Thanks for your indulgence.
