Is there any value in .IO domains?

If all other domains are taken for a word is their value in the .IO of the same?

Just curios as have seen one of interest.

Thanks

IMO, it's a start up fad.

Once these start ups discover .com bleed, they will be scrambling to acquire the .com versions of their .io domains. It's happening with .co, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen with .me.

Having said this, I think it's a cool-looking ccTLD, and great if the start up has the .com counterpart--that way, bleed to .com won't matter.

;)

So maybe good for investment on the .io side and also if someone's lucky to own the .com of it, then the .com side...

huh

"doc.io" registered in 2007, potentially by Microsoft but may have been acquired in 2010 by MS. Cant tell........... But, there does seem to be some value in these. :)

now that a number of start-ups have used .io does this make keywords in them more valuable?

Thanks

Nope.

Some startups are buying .io domains because they don't want to buy a .com on the aftermarket (and .io is geek too).
However .io domains are more expensive but... I don't think that somebody who starts with a poor domain has a long horizon to begin with.
If you are really successful ultimate rebranding will be inevitable imho.

Just follow the reported sales, that should tell you which kinds of domains are selling :)

It was kind of popular in the cryptocoin sceane. However the biggest website that I know that uses .io was hacked and everybody lost there bitcoins that were stored there
inputs.io so a lot of people that know about that might remember that when they see an .io domain.

So do they only really tend to have value once developed?

There are thousands of dot coms selling for a few coins or being dropped, only few domains are valuable for what they are, most of them are valuable for the transit they have developed that is the reason why dropped domains with high traffic are inmediately snapped because traffic is equal money.
I think .IO is no more or no less than other ccTLD in the sense they allow you still grab some generic names that you could use for personal development projects.

Wouldnt the hacking be a reflection on the coding of the website and not the actual domain extension as a whole??

yes it would, however since there are not so many developed .io websites I am sure that was the main one.

Sure, craigslist will just ruin you!
Geesh, what were you thinking?
hey, .io sounds like a cool extension.
And since I like craigslist and everyone and there brother uses it, knows of it, I will get craigslist.io....

There is a new influx of .IO domains on Flippa in past weeks. Of course all of them are ultra short and brand able and they go for about 5000 - 15000$.
So if you sit on some 3 letter or category killers, this might be the time.

Good luck
