You can pick any reliable hosting provider and it should be suitable for ecommerce sites (no special requirements needed). Most hosts offer free shared SSL which means that the URL of the certificate is a generic one, and not from your site; but at least you can upload files, so it'll be in the format of https://genericsecuredomain.com/~yourusername/yourfile.php

For ecommerce sites you should consider a standard SSL 128-bit certificate, which are usually provided as yearly addons... for our clients we support 256-bit AES certificates from RapidSSL as well, due to supporting their specific server requirements.

Good luck!

Of course many hosts offer shared SSL for free. But ecommerce sites, you can still use shared SSL. Highly recommend use paid SSL, for security reason so your customer can trust your site by making payment.

what is the difference between a shared SSL and a private one?
Shared SSL shows as https://ipaddress/~yourusername/
Private SSL shows as https://www.yourdomain.com in the address bar

If u are really serious about ur e-commerce site then go for the most trusted and branded hosting who actually has good customer support and real 99.9% uptime. Dont just go for any site . u will lose ur customer if ur site goes down

Just look for a provider with a good track record. Find a host that's well established and known for good service and support. Don't just sign up with someone because they offer the cheapest price or sound the nicest.

They've already pretty much explained the difference. I'll echo the idea that you should use a private SSL certificate if you are serious about your ecommerce website. It's much more professional when you can display a trusted logo on your website and just the feeling of security that a potential client will get from it alone is worth it.

Since you're talking about ecommerce I will assume this is an important site. That being said, you really should go with a hosting company that has been around and has a proven record of survival. WWW.Ipowerweb.com and WWW.Ez1Web.com have both been around a long time, but of course there are many others to pick from. Personnaly I don't think the difference between shared SSL and the privately held ones makes much difference to the majority of buyers.
