Now this really applies to solid non premium domains.

Take a look at your portfolio, be honest with yourself, get opinions from people you respect.

What are your best domains ? That just so long as the world keeps spinning and you are in an ok position to great position financially, you will keep until you get your price.

Now think about the so - so domains that before this exercise you were going to renew.

Add to that new regs you are thinking about ? Are they good ? Better or equal to your best ?

If not, do not renew, do not add new registration. Instead take the same money you were absolutely going to spend and add to your best .tv domains instead.

Now you have added value in a sales proposition. You can use the regged til 3 years out as a bargaining chip to get more for your domain.

Another added benefit is it shows people you are serious about the domain and it will not be dropping anytime soon. Many times people who are interested will check whois and see "Hmm expires in two months maybe they will drop it, I will wait to see if the domain gets renewed or if the domain drops, picking it up for registration fee." If they see regged til 2011 they will be more apt to make an offer and not wait around playing games.

Again IMO

I agree with your sentiments and will be taking a long look at my upcoming renewals this summer with a far more critical eye.

I would add that although this plan is good for names you already own - the opposite may be the case for registration of new names.

I recently bought a name I really liked - used the registrars 'special offer' to buy several years upfront and a few weeks later have a different view of the name. With any portfolio of names you are bound to have your 'lemon moments'.

Sometimes it takes a few weeks for a name to hit you as being an absolute 'keeper' or a 'what was I thinking' purchase.

My policy now is to only register several years upfront if the name is an absolute 100% - never gonna give you up - kind of name.

Otherwise I will now wait a few weeks on a one year reg - and then add extra registration time.

Out of interest, can anyone confirm that google also use the renewal dates as part of their rankings criteria?

A good post ray and everyone should read it.

With me personally I am trimming my names down and keeping a small portfolio for years to come.

When I am done selling, start the developing process and try to get couple projects off the ground.

I would say only buy names that your an expert in or as a hobby. Don't buy things just because or get into the hype around domaining. That was my first rookie lesson in first year.

Thanks Equity.

I think my registrars may now be in for a good summer.
