OK, just how stupid are they over at the US Mint? I mean, I really don't see the use of a dollar coin ever becoming widespread or successful.. the Sacajawea dollar coin was a terrible flop! No on wants to carry around a pocket full of dollar coins!

Not to mention the first 4 designs to be released are really scary looking!

Dollar coins are used in Canada, have been for years!
We have the "loonie" for $1 and "toonie" for $2
we were supposed to get a $5 coin, but I don't think they
could make it rhyme with the other 2 so they squashed it!
Just as well, who wants a pocket full of coins ..

I think they're trying to duplicate the success of the state quarter program and appeal to collectors.. someone is getting a kickback on this or something  They should make the dollar bill more appealing or bring back the $2 or $3 denominations and do away with pennies.. they're losing money on pennies anyway!

Maybe they need to save money by moving to some sort of plastic coinage or, hm, can we say "national debit card"? Sure, we can!

Which, just as an aside, I've been thinking of using wooden nickels to advertise and got a free sample in the mail today from www.adstuitco.com .. really good quality and cheap prices!

Foonie? :p

I find $1 and $2 coins very useful. Makes it so much easier using vending machines and coin washes and laundries, etc.

But I don't see the purpose of a penny or a nickel. Even dimes.

With the runaway American national debt they might have no choice but to convert to a dollar coin versus a dollar bill. It will save tens of millions of dollars a year as coins have a much longer life-span.

Canadians thought the loonie would never go anywhere... then they said that of the twoonie and now both are an afterthought as we are so used to them. Saves our national bank a ton and thus saves me tax dollars. A few coins in my wallet or more on my tax bill... not a hard choice to make.

And not to be topped - the Canadian Mint is mulling over making million dollar coins! LOL

I've had a lot of trouble in my life with getting vending machines to accept dollar bills. A conversion to coins would be ideal in my case.

From FatWallet:

The US Mint will be releasing the new $1 presidential coins. To educate the public, they are giving away promotional items (mostly pamphlets). But, the one of the items you can order is a coin holder that holds the first 4 presidential coins (released this year). This is a nice thing for collectors. It's supposed to be for retailers, organizations, or educators. The minimum quantity is a 5-pack. But its all FREE on the US Mint site.

One of the most interesting things from the Wiki site:

On Tuesday, November 28, 2006 U.S. District Judge James Robertson ordered the Treasury Department to change U.S. banknotes to make it easier for blind and visually impaired people to determine their denominations. Ruling on a lawsuit filed in 2002 by the American Council of the Blind, Judge Robertson accepted the plaintiff's argument that current practice violates Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. (Ruling as PDF file) The Treasury is appealing the decision.

The plaintiff's attorney was quoted as saying "It's just frankly unfair that blind people should have to rely on the good faith of people they have never met in knowing whether they've been given the correct change." Government attorneys estimated that the cost of such a change ranges from $75 million in equipment upgrades and $9 million annual expenses for punching holes in bills to $178 million in one-time charges and $50 million annual expenses for printing bills of varying sizes.[4]

I'm in favor of eliminating the penny and the nickel too. Instead of rounding everything to the nearest five cents, just drop the extra decimal place and go to the nearest $0.1. Instead of something costing $1.72 it costs $1.7. It would sure be easier to just deal with quarters and dimes.

So much for $1.99 lol or the 99 cent big sac (doritos).. I love my loonies and my toonies. I went to US once and I kept giving the person the wrong cash value. Because your money all looks the same lol. I like my monolopy money :)

Can't have quarters if you lose the last decimal place - unless you rebadge quarters to be .20 or .30 or .50 or something, or keep nickels.

And if you want to know about some annoyingly small coins (In size and value), take a look at Slovakia's currency:
$1 = 30 Krowns
1 Krown = 100 Hailer
$1 = 3,000 Hailers
And there are still 10 Hailer coins... tiny little buggers that don't buy anything, but they still have them (Basically 1/3 of a cent).
