When can I move to Cali??

Still so cheap compared to the UK. Almost $10 a gallon here at the moment.

A little over $10 a gallon here in Portugal. In most European countries, gas is between $8.50 - $11.00. Hope that makes Americans feel better.

Refineries must make a special "California Blend", which gives us "the world's cleanest gasoline". Considering the high cost of gas in other countries, its a damn good deal.

We also have the toughest auto emissions standards in the U.S.. The result is a better quality of life as air quality improves.

Ya know, one of the byproducts from refining petroleum is polyethylene / plastics. Years ago I worked for Getty Oil, though based in Chicago I had to make quality control trips to our plastics plant, across the border, in Clinton, Iowa.

Of course Getty put its manufacturing plant in Iowa because the pollution standards are so low. The air emission standards were so lax we could flare-off waste gases 24-7.

So I wouldn't laugh too hard at Cali. Better to pay a high price at the pump, than have your pump pay a high price to breathe.

Outward migration from Iowa is very low.
Lot of people actually move to Iowa (hey, I am a case in point).

I live in Cali, and it is expensive. Not as expensive as it was in Japan when I was out there though; they make up for it by having efficient public transportation though.
