Anyone been using Google Desktop Search?
It searches your computer for files, visited web pgs, email ,if you use Outllook, (which I don't :( ) etc. using same format as a web search. I like it!

Just doesn't seem safe to me, and really, i don't want anyone else coming up to my computer at work or elsewhere being able to find anything that quickly.

Exactly.. even tho there's an option to exclude files from the search... could be handy if it weren't sending ANY info back to Google as well.. I never quite buy that "no personally identifiable information" bit..

I am the only one that uses/has access to my computer so I don't have that issue-but can see where that could be a prob.
In regards to privacy, sharing w/ Google is an opt in choice. I am not sharing info over the net. Additionally, you can filter out files that you don't want indexed.
I see it,simply, as a tool that indexes your desktop and allows you to search using keywords, file names etc. The search can be refined-similar to a web search, and results are immediate. A vast improvement over the Windows search tool which is slow and terrible.
But, I have just begun using it this week, and the jury is still out.

Agreed. Skepticism is the first line of security. Even if they are not, at present, using your data this way, what is to say that they can't in the future.

How is selecting the preference, of not sending a Windows crash report to Microsoft, any different from not electing to share info or send crash reports to Google? Their promise of not using "personally identifiable" info is a moot point if you elect to not send them any info to begin with.
My understanding is that the application is totally localized to your computer, unless you elect to make it public, including reports concerning any bugs that may show up.
I'm not trying to be argumentitive, here. I'd really like to know if I am missing something and should get rid of the prog.

Google also has another new tool called "Google Suggest Beta". Go to this page and type in the letter "a" and it'll popup a list of words in realtime. I love this tool!

I used the Desktop Google Search once I believe, it was pretty good at first but later on I just feel there was no need for it really.

Oooh! Now that's a good tool! I'd recommend everyone try it out so that they can take it out of beta. :)
