I've been using MyDomain to search for available domain names & haven't had any problems until now. Seems that their whois searches are being monitered. Found a .com domain available but was waiting for some funds in Paypal. Checked it today & it's registered by "Click Cons Ltd". I know, I should've registered it immediately, but didn't.

After doing a Google search on them, it seems that a few people have had the same issues with them. Here are their details:

Click Cons. Ltd
Kings Court, Bay Street
P.O. Box N-3944
Nassau,
BS
+852.30178436
+852.30178436

Anyone else had this company register a domain they were going to get? Do they usually drop it after 5 days if no revenue?

I guess domain tasting is free ? or there is some fee when you do not want to keep the domain ?

I am new here, so please send me a link where i can find more info on domain tasting and which all companies are offering it.

I was actually talking about companies that moniter your search results then register those domains that you've been typing in the whois search

Yeah, that sucks... Have been burned a few times so now I create a list of dn's that are of interest (ordering them from best to so-so). Once I have the funds, I start checking a few at a time and pick them up as available until the funds run out. Those left on the list go to the next round.

Never heard of Click Cons.

One way to avoid such problems is query the TLD zone directly, such a.gtld-servers.net for .com, .net domains ... if no name servers shown, then likely domain is available.

Next best way, sometimes better actually if one needs to be absolutely sure right away of availabity, is to do a whois directly at the respective registry ...

ie. for .com, .net, .cc, tv, .jobs use:
http://registrar.verisign-grs.com/whois/

Alternatively, one may also utilize Internic.net for most any of the gTLDs...

http://www.internic.net/whois.html

...including .com, .net, .mobi, etc ... but this may not be optimal for various reasons, including slowness, since they are proxying the requests - one often does better to check a whois db as close to the source as possible.

For some people, tracking down a particular db to query, etc is too much hassle / too time consuming ... then in those instances, another strategy to consider is checking the domains you may really want, along with a bunch of similar, but crappy domains (at least for you) too ... by throwing a lot of "noise" into searches, it's possible to track down which 3rd party whois services are "leaking" results (and yes, please post about them on the forums so others know which whois services to avoid), and also importantly, by querying a lot of extraneous domains, if queries are being "leaked", it's very likely the domain(s) you really want won't be grabbed at all, or at worst, if being tasted, most likely released quickly, since tasters typically release most of what they taste.

I use Domain Name Analyzer. Been using it since June, and no problems whatsoever. JMHO
