Animating with GIMP?

Hey guys how do you animate with gimp? I have tried layers but it doesn't seem to work what am I doing wrong am I doing something wrong? Oh well can I just get some help?

P.S. Is it possible to animate with Photoshop 5.0?

I'd rather use Flash or imageReady for web animations.
And I know that 6.0 and 7.0 packages can animate, in fact I havent seen PSP5.0 in ages now.
Anyhow, Coolprogram, you know 3ds max, so why dont you try that?

P.S. 5.0 version comes with image ready (as i can remember) which does animation

By the way what do you rckon is better: the latesr GIMP or PSP CS2?
I 've never used GIMP in my life and oly heard about it from my mates.

Price of both is not the issue, anyway as I have PSP CS2 and not complaining;
So what's so good about Gimp what leaves Addobe's creation behind?

TY for the reply, I don't want to use 3DS MAX because I want to learn this for the "FUTURE". (I feel so cool quoting things ahhh LOL) Just download GIMP at http://www.gimp.org . It is very good an it's free...I like it I don't use it that much since I do have 3DS MAX and I try to 3D model the most time I get. Oh and thanks for the image ready thing I will have to check it out,
