I have a question to ask pertaining to
my parenting. I would like to know your
opinion and ask that it be a serious one.

My wife called me and asked me if our
daughter and two (2) of her friends could
go (be dropped off) at the mall and walk
around. She is 14 yrs. old. We live in
Las Vegas.

Q: What would be your answer?

Yes
No
Not sure

* ooops --> "allow" :)

I voted NO.

25 years ago, I would have said no problem, Go and have fun. In today's times, unfortunately our teen generations have lost many privileges do to safety and their actions of responsibility and judgement. This as a majority, But there are exceptions of course.

I hate to say it, But the internet is a majority of the problem, along with cell phones.

I would prob. say yes... drop them off, return home and disguise myself as a women and then return to the mall to check up on them.

My daughter is only 6 so I have a few years to pick out a nice outfit for myself and let my hair grow long.

I said yes. Malls are a relatively safe place. You never stated your concerns though.

voted yes but that is under the condition that they call me for a ride home from inside the mall and don't leave and walk somewhere else

Yes... If it was a boy you would have no problem right?

As a mother of a daughter, who is now 27 YAY :hearts:

But if you don't let her go to the mall with her friends,
then I hope you have a backup plan to help her forget she wasn't allowed
to go alone, "even though all her friends are going" :p

What I used to do, I would go to the mall with her and drop her with
her friends, I would do some shopping maybe some lunch...
at least that way I was in the mall at the same time,
but not "crowding her space" ;)

At 18 are you going to let your daughter go to College?

If you can't let her go to the mall at 14 you're in real trouble. She will be driving her friends around at 16.

I would put GPS tracking on her phone. I would then ONLY use it in emergency situations or agreed times (late at meeting point etc). Independence is important and 14 is old enough.

Stupid question - have you talked to the parents of the other kids? I think talking to them might help you understand how their kids are (well behaved, trouble) or at least give you a collective understanding that they are all allowed and what the rules are.

You can coordinate without being overbearing. Concern is appreciated. Making them feel "parented" won't.

It's up to you and no one knows your daughter like you do. You could do what miss_chiff says - maybe ask them if they would like to meet you in x hours at the Starbucks/Ice Cream store or whatever and you'll get em something. If she bucks and screams... you're parenting :)

By the Way. I have NO KIDS. I don't want THIS KIND OF RESPONSIBILITY. :hearts:

14 is a close call, true college isnt far off, but a lot of growth happens over the next few years, whether or not they go and hang out.
Local conditions apply....my area, yes, if I am confident her friends have their wits about them, no if they are flakey. Pure judgement call.

Yes, nothing wrong with it... you cannot lock them into the house till they are 30...

I've got 2 daughters, still several years away from 14, but I would let them go at that age assuming they are responsible kids and the mall isn't filled with gang members. Here in Japan, in fact, it's fairly normal to see kids this age and younger out on their own in the city. Can't keep them under lock and key forever, much as we might like to.

NO, although now is the 21 st century, but I still feel she was too young.

If she's alone, I wont, but if she's going with friends. I guess there's no problem with it. She's a grown up kid already:)

I voted no, She is not yet ready for that, her friends might influence her only with non sense things in life. I want to preserve my daughter's conservativeness.
