My first time buying domain names, what I've been basically doing is using a wordlist with a search type program, my question is, am I wasting my time doing this? Or do people actually get lucky? I ran a good 40,000 searches and found only a very tiny amount, and those were not worth it imo. I wasn't expecting any different, but like I said, do people get lucky? I managed to get analyzer dot xyz yesterday and one that I didn't end up buying, but it was registered 30 minutes later.

Am I looking in teh right place?

Dont buy any .xyz names, stick to .com if you want to sell it later

There is no value in the extensions

As gilescoley said above, stick to .com domains, especially when you are new at domaining. There is some value in other extensions but most of the time it's better to wait until you know exactly what to look for.

Do as much reading as you can before going and registering domains. The .xyz are just getting some buzz right now because of the whole Google madness thing but it will die out soon and most of the .xyz domains that people buy willwind up getting dropped when renewal time comes.

And it's just the beginning. You must very picky when buying a domain, in fact anything that is still available is available for a reason.

Lots of people here will tell you that you can make money in obscure extensions.

Ignore them.

Best of luck.

I only buy .com or .net domains. They are easier to sale.

I did the same thing in april, may when I started. Checked hundreds of thousands of .coms with a method what I developed. Then I regged a lot, I sold 2 in total of $130, and have got offers for three others in total of $640, what I countered all back, and none sold. I have 5 others at Brandbucket in a total sales prices of $9000. So I would say, It worth to check, but I would rather buy expired ones now, since I pretty sure I gonna drop next year at least 130 names what I don't want to renew. I try not to hand reg anymore, only if I have some badass idea, and it's still free. Listening a lot of DomainSherpa during work, and reading the forums is extremely helpful.

Hello Trent, handregging isnt the problem. The problem is you haven't figured out the best way to filter the crap and pick valuable names. Handregs are the best way to cut your teeth without too much risk.

Take a hard critical look at your portfolio. Have one or two others with experience look at it too and tell you what to drop. Dont let renewals on names that will never sell weigh you down. Everyday valuable names drop and are available to register.

Spend alot of time playing with expireddomains.net, learn the filters. Stick to .coms that make sense without hypens. Find names with other extensions registered, Think when registering not only would a business use this domain? Are there existing businesses that could benefit from this .com? Can I identify leads that should want to own this name?

Dont fall for buying names just because other domainers want them. I'm still learning, but I've found that the majority of domainers are wasting money on names at auction i would pass on even with godaddy $1 codes.

Buy with the enduser in mind. Buy .com, and research every domain for endusers before hitting the buy button.

Excluding handregs and getting into auctions/dropcatches quickly can get expensive. It leads to impulsive bidding because if you dont bid now, you will miss out. That is just not good for someone who hasnt yet learned how to identify domain value.

I say stick with handregs (Or at least cheap closeout and expiring auctions) until you are successful at flipping them and have made some house money to play with. Then start climbing up.
