If you thought of a name for a domain but you realize its already taken, do you look for alternatives like adding an extra abbreviation to it like dev, or something along the lines like that?

I thought I'd ask this question because I'm thinking of starting a website with a specific name, however its already registered like the title of this thread states... and thought I'd ask if it is a wise decision to register it with another abbreviation like dev at the end? :bah:

You could always look for other extensions. If they are also taken, then I'd consider adding the other letters as long as they have some meaning to the first word.

If the name if more than one word, you could explore adding a hyphen. I would stick with names that are easy to say/remember. Also, using a .tld other than .com is becoming more & more common.

Adding an extention to the word you are looking for is a good and very common idea. Actually it can even be hard to find good domains with some kind of extention like dev, net, web and so on under .com since they are taken as well :)

dotster

I enter the name I want at Dotster (knowing it is already taken), then I consider the gazillion suggestions that dotster comes up with for alternatives.

Rather than add something, take a look at the other TLD's and ccTLD's first and exhaust those possibilities, including the possibility of adding a hyphen.

If you do add something, make it short and relevant.
