I was always confused on this. I think if he uses it for slander and things of that nature there can be an issue. But aren't fan sites okay?

If it's a non-commercial "fan site" ... there may be leniencies (a lot may depend on its intent and purpose for registration and actions/inactions by its registrant as well), IMHO. In all honesty, I personally would avoid such registrations ... as they will likely be persued! :blink:

So, I checked out the auction on NJ and I don't see when it ends. Not to familiar with NJ so if anyone could give me a heads up on how that works I'd appreciate it..

BTW, I am not buying the domain but would like to watch the auction go down.

any time someone owns a site that spells someone's name or someone's TM they face potential legal issues. It all depends how litigious the person of that name is. And if it went to court or through ICANN, Allen/TM owner would win and the domain owner would have to give it up for $0.

we have many names that are common and also shared by famous people. as long as we do not mislead the public into thinking the site has anything to do with the famous person- all people sharing the same name should have equal rights to purchase it from us.

A dispute requires.

1.) TM or Name Infringement
2.) No Legit Reason to own the domain.
3.) Showing Bad Faith.

It can be really hard to prove #3 if you use these domains in a legit fashion.

the domain is worth nothing unless it refers to the nba player. So using it for anything else would be useless as taking advantage of any traffic it generates woul constitute bad faith,
I own brucesutter.com, genetuneey.com, efrenreyes.com. I bought them cheap so if they hassled me I would just give it to them and maybe get something cool in return.

Surprisingly, it looks like Iverson doesn't have his own site.
If I owned it I would keep a low profile and just park it. If he comes a calling, give it to him and maybe you'll get some tickets or an autographed basketball.
