When looking at hand registering a .ai, I've come across times where the corresponding keywordai.com is available for hand registration (although most of the time it's taken). Should this dissuade me from registering the .ai? Perhaps if both are avail there is a reason (less likely to be a diamond in the rough?)

Or should I, if the name is good, acquire the .ai and hand reg the keywordai.com for protection? Or, perhaps I don't even need to acquire the corresponding keywordai.com?

I know it could be considered on a case by case basis, but for obvious reasons I can't show the name(s) I'm looking at.
Appreciate hearing everyones thoughts as it may help crystallize mine.

AI is such a trendy field, it would be hard for me to believe there is anything that great available in either format.

The problem with .AI is registration/renewal fees are pushing $100/year.

If no one thinks the .COM is worth $10/year is the .AI really worth that carrying cost?

I think it's a case by case basis and depends on a number of factors from brandability to cost.

I decided to buy the 3 keywordai.com names for the .ai's where they were available. I invested a pretty penny into them and have them for 2 years... seems like for the add'l $17 ea (for 2 years) I should protect that investment. Sadly, by not thinking of this earlier, another investor hand regged one of them 3 days after I hand regged the .ai. But I got 3 of 4.

This does give me pause for new .ai and other TLDs names (should I find any). If the keywordTLD.com is avail, I will think harder before hand registering them.

I do wonder if buyers/live websites don't care though. There are many .io, .so, etc, websites live and active and I wonder if they all own their keywordio.com or keywordso.com as well. My guess is they don't and that is why they ended up with keyword.io or keyword.so in the first place.

I came to conclusion that those who build their websites on (.ai) are those who can't afford the (.com) version of their brand, because the (.ai) is expensive to maintain, it keeps domain investors away from this extension, that is why many businesses start using (.ai) more, cause it was available to hand reg.
Personally I not own any (.ai) but i wanted to reg some, I decided that I own pretty allot of (.com) which is enough for me.
If there would be some special dictionary words in (.ai) then I would reg some, otherwise I will abstain.
In short I prefer to type (.com) first and most, sometimes (.org) and (.net), I don't remember typing (ai, io or xyz) domains, maybe only when a website is really popular like opensea, in this case I go to (.io) extension directly. I also realized that long domains are too long to type, even of my own website, so I will look to rebrand one day, the short ones are good, many still type facebook, wtf i type fb,com easy peasy, considering that i may visit once per month.
But when websites are like some apps linked then it's easy, you even may not see a 10 word domain.
