Hi All - I was wondering if someone could answer a question about a target size for the web-pages we are designing. We are making pages that will have photographs on them and we would like to know wha† size (in kb or mb) we should be aiming for.

Thanks,

from San Francisco.

Use the highest compression possible untill the images start to show noticible artifacts.

There's no recommended file size for images in web pages, just make them as small as possible without losing too much quality.

A couple of MB's? WoW!

While I concede that I am not an expert by any means I would think that a web page of even just a MB would be much to large. While it would be great to have every one on a broadband connection many are still on dial up and a large page will choke that connection.

Too many images or images that are too large will kill a site. You should, as pointed out, optimize all your images for display and if they are an integral part of the site you can always offer a link to he hi-res version.

One thing you should be doing when you finish a site/page is load test it to ensure that it will be easily accessed by folks across the modem spectrum. Do a search for load test website and you will find a bevy of tools to help you. A good load test site should display load times at various modem speeds as well as show you flags/warnings on your site that can help you optimize the pages.

I have one that I use and if you would like the URL send me a PM.

Good luck with your pages.
