I have just sold a domain name on afternic bazaar...However the buyer wants me to unlock the domain and give him an authorisation code to transfer to another registrar. I am insisting that the domain be pushed to him on godaddy, so that I don't get a paypal reverse if a third party hijacks the domain (payment not made yet)...he can then effect the transfer to the registrar of his choice. Any comments?

He won't be able to transfer the name away (to a different registrar) for 60 days, if you force him to accept a transfer at GoDaddy. When an ownership change takes place there, they won't allow the domain to be moved away for a 60 day period.

That is probably why he prefers not to move it around at GoDaddy.

By the way, the odds of having your domain hijacked during transfer are a million to one. I salute you for being careful, and that's always a top priority, but this is done hundreds of times per day without incident.

Good luck Yoshi. :)

I agree,And don't unlock the name until the money is your paypal account.People try this all the time,You push it and they don't pay.

godaddy does not seem to offer a facility to transfer out a domain name without a sideways transfer on the domain management page. I have requested an authorisation code from them by email, but any pointers welcome...

I've had a similar issue with escrowing a name. What I did was create an account for the buyer and push the name to that. I then asked escrow.com and the buyer to confirm that the name had been transferred to the correct buyer. Once that was done I supplied the password to the buyer.
Basically the idea here is that I retain control of the name until the buyer has agreed that it has been correctly transferred. No chance of hijacking unless the password is intercepted of something silly like that.

If you used Escrow.com, I don't understand why you'd be concerned about passwords?? The buyer remits payment to escrow.com, you transfer the domain, escrow.com and the buyer confirm the transfer, the funds are released. I've used it many times and have never had a problem following the steps they lay out for domain sales.

How much did it sell for? Chances are it's just not worth the trouble.

$25...I think you are right...I am just following through on this one as a first pass to see where it goes, but in future no sideways push no trade...I will cancel out on this sale if the problem continues. just waiting for GD to reply to my query...will report back at end of this story....

My own policy is to not do registrar transfers before doing an ownership transfer. I only make an exception if the buyer gives me a release of all liability should a problem occur with the transfer. I'm not so worried about hijacking, but if a domain is in my name and transferred to another account which I can't access, there is a chance neither party could get access if an error occurs. Also, most registrar transfers don't state the name of the transferring party, so there is a slight possibility you could approve one to the wrong person in the form of a hijack or hijack scam.

I strongly discourage, but have done a few if paid first at the buyers risk.

There are a number of reasons:
1.It was a high value sale
2.I'm paranoid
3.I guess I know a few tricks most people don't

This is useful advice re release of liability. The buyer has already paid. I have received a message now from godaddy how to get the authorisation code. We have to wait 3 more days yet before the 60 day period for transfers are up.
