So one of my clients approached me with a domain that I believe is worth a LOT, but I'd like to get NPers' opinion on how much it's worth (as I don't consider myself anywhere near an expert in the field of domaining).

omfg.com

How much do you fine folks believe would be the price for this domain?

The "F" lowers the value. You can't exactly develop a respectable site with one of the words meaning FUC*...
There is value though. I'd say High $8xx to Under $15xx

Oh... I personally refrain from using GOD in that acronym...
I say gosh..

offensive to hopefully alot of people

Low-mid $$$$.

I would value it somewhere around low XX,XXX. omfg is a well known acronym, obviously.

omfg = mid xxxx

Strange - I do not consider it offensive in the least.

After all, who invented F---ing anyway?

I would guess mid to high $$$ to domainers, if it were mine I would hold out for high $$$$, but be prepared to wait for a long time.

Y factor name. No telling what it would sell for in an auction, but it's probably worth a decent bit.
Not massive cash, but it would be measured in thousands and it is the kind of name that if two people with deep pockets have the right 'idea' for it and are aware that it's being sold, it could go higher.

I could see this as being the name of one of the best video sites on the web.

Mid to high x,xxx wholesale.

25k+ to someone with vision.

I have seen similar domains to this sell for Mid $X,XXX range reseller.

Some points of interest:
- 4 letter domains will increase in value over time as they become increasingly scarce.
- 4 letter domains with meaning, will increase even more
- it happens this 4 letter acronym relates to mobile web activity which is always on the rise
- omfg google search gets 3.5M hits
- omfg gets 135K global search hits per month (google keyword tool)

point is, stats aren't great for it, but it clearly has value. Personally, I would not part with it for less than $5K...no chance. I'd research what it takes to find the "vision" Ben42 mentioned and get $25K+ for it.

The other option would be to download status.net and make a quick twitter clone and instead of "what's happening" ask "who did you sleep with?" or something that would produce an "omfg" response.

There are 456,976 of them.

There were 456,976 of them in 1985
There were 456,976 of them in 2005
There will be 456,976 of them in 2025
etc, etc, etc, etc...

Also, as a side point, as an avid student of mania behavior, one of the classic 'signals' is when the rabble start saying "(X) will only increase in value over time because of (insert tenuous, unsupported reason here)..."

Like, various incarnations of that very phrase has been standard in *every* mania since the Dutch and tulips.

Yeah, of course there is the same # available since their inception, lol

These 4 letters surely have been in existence since 85, but these 4 letters have taken on a whole new meaning since then.
Now everybody knows and uses this acronym daily, since texting revolutionized its own shorthand language.

The fact that OMFG is "now" synonymous with "shock" value now, creates (newer than '85) monstrous possibilities for this domain.

easy $xx,xxx.

Its a great domain name in the sense that it can be branded quite nicely. However, it doesn't lend itself to anything in particular, accept maybe shock video or gossip. I would believe if this domain name expired and went to NameJet or Snap - we would see a sales price in the mid $x,xxx. However, I believe in this case, the reseller pricing and end-user are probably pretty close.

I believe this domain to a end-user is in the range of 5-7k. With reseller, 3-5k.

As the internet grows, and new audiences surface, fixed supplies will become more scarce and hence increase in value. I'm not preaching mania, but there is a basic supply and demand of economics going on here...some day (and it may be 100 years from now) any 5 letter domain name will command a premium over most longer domain names (assuming they have the internet in 100 years).

In order for something to attain a higher future value, it must have value to begin with.
Useless LLLL.coms only appeal to 'domain collectors' and people who participate at the absolute lowest level of this game.

To bet that such names will increase in value over time (which is contingent on demand for them increasing) is essentially betting on an exponential growth of 'domainers' and a presumption that the vast majority of them will suck very, very badly at domaining, since those are the only people who buy pointless LLLL.com names for the sake of ownership.

Is this occurance impossible? That the caliber and intelligence level of domainers keeps drifting lower and lower until we hit some random point in the future where every 80 IQ dolt out there is impulsively lighting their McDonalds paychecks on fire to buy 3d names, QXVZ.com and making certain they "get in" on the .forsure landrush? No, this sort of future behavior isn't impossible (since we needn't look any further than the present to see examples of it happening), but the LLLL.com mania is/was based on the absolute dumbest aspects of domain buying and I'd like to think that the community will learn from it's past mistakes and things like this will take their rightful place in the historical dustbin, alongside such domaining mistakes as putting a dash between the E and the keyword, b2b names, and pretty much every first time, newly registered name since 2006 or so.

(none of this is commentary on omfg.com. That's a great name and an example of a LLLL.com name that is NOT useless, however, it's value lies in the meaning inherent to the letters themselves and not the fact that there are only four of them)

One of the most accurate barometers of intelligence is ones ability to comprehend sarcasm- starting at blatant and working up towards the more nuanced stuff.

My sigline would be an example of "blatant".

People who take everything hyper-literally are almost always preeeeeeeeeeeetty dumb.

So, I question 2 of your contradictory writings, all within the same Post,
and you state your opinions constantly, and come across as the God of domaining...
and you want to call me dumb now?

Think before you write, and Grow the F up.
