If you haven't read this response from Mark to a June 11, 2009 blog post (5th comment down), it may be one of the most important notes on domaining you will ever read.

For application of the above advice, Google search the following keywords with or without quotes:

unstructured information
lemon sour
automatic pencils
pay later catalogs
small business copiers
movie rental releases
creme de cocoa
high quality wigs
engraved pet tags

The keyword phrases with .com added that you see in the results are from my company portfolio. Shhhh! ... (you are all now sworn to secrecy)

Rep if you like (or even if you don't!), and always do your due diligence and confirm stats & analytics data!

While I agree with many of Mark's ideas in his article, this will not work over the long-term. No one wants to see an Internet littered with millions upon millions of mini-sites that have practically no value to the user.

The main problem is with Bing and Google now in an apparent war, search technologies will advance faster and search results will return sites of unique and value rich content. These "mini-sites" will become penalized beyond imagination (in the same way parked pages are today) based on their total lack or content and vacuum of value to the site visitor. IMO.

Absolutely agree with you. In the future, those minisites will need to evolve into fully developed content rich portals that become the best source of information for the product, service or subject matter represented by the keywords of the domain name. Getting it done with multiple sites will become a challenge, but not one that is insurmountable. I wouldn't be surprised if Google rolled out its own product similar to DevHub.com - only with all the usual Google bells and whistles. It would be fitting, in that Google jump started the domain industry when it began to offer ways to monetize domain names without adding any real value to the domain space. The law of unintended consequences in action. Nevertheless, the underlying concept of longtail keywords still holds true. Managing it efficiently for profit will be the real work.

Along those lines, but geared specifically for the domain industry's large portfolio holders. A module based CMS - maybe with ai and other next generation technology that assists in creating full featured content rich sites in ways that can be easily managed and meet the expectations of site visitors 100%. Properly set-up, it would never be mistaken for spam, litter or wasted space (not by fooling anybody, but by being what it is supposed to be - original, authentic and informative).

Properly implemented, it would take the place of Adsense for domains and all other parked page business models.
