Yes, in the rural areas.

Luckily, .in doesn't have to be used just for an Indian target audience.
For instance, I'm developing tos.in as a "terms of service" depository type site (Not any time soon, nothing there yet). I liked it because tos.com is obviously gone and would cost a pretty penny, however tos.in is somewhat memorable and short, another benefit of the .in extension.

^yes true... but will TOS be worth anything as a domain?
or is this just a hype they are putting out to get sales?
3letter .INs will be worth anything? x,xxx value? xx value etc...

THANKS for the info guys

If we knew for sure how much they would be worth in the future, there wouldn't be a "market" for them not, but instead more of an exchange based on the return on future value.
Really, my bet is they end up below .us, .net, .info, and the like. But will be more valuable than .sc's in the long run.

Keep this in mind, India has one of the largest English speaking populations...

Yes many more people speak Hindi in India but English is a major language there too.

3 letter .ins are now worthless and I doubt will become worth too much in the future, I doubt it will ever be worth as much as a 3 letter .de...

True, India was under British rule for a long time and the love for learning is very embedded in the Indian urban culture.

I actually like .de's a bit more than .in right now just because of the sheer number of .de's registered and their cheap price at nsi.com .

Development or planting the development seed is the key...
As it is with 90% of the names out there...

English is one of the official languages in India. Supposedly India also has the largest English speaking population in the world, although no one has ever showed me proof of this. So I wouldn't discard English words as an option.

Anyway, I'd pick a good English word over a bad 3 letter any day. You'd be lucky to get 1k for jzq.com, so don't expect to do better with the .in

India's a good bet for a medium term good return on names. Lots of people, strong tech industry, plenty of online purchases, and plenty of room to grow. If you're willing to hold a name for 2-3 years I'd say it's a fair investment.

.in

Dot .in could be similar to a .de some day, may be even bigger...

Majority of Indians are yet to go online (over 90-95%). A very small number of .com's are owned by Indians living in India. In the next 5 years, as folks begin to realise the impact of internet, there will be a need for names in India...and since .com's are taken, the next best thing would be a patriotic extension name...similar to the german thinking...

The reason .us has not picked up yet, is because most of the .com's are owned by us Americans....

That is my rationale and I am sticking with it..

So that only means between 50 and 100 million online? (fair sized market)

Over 1 billion Indians in 2001!

So the cowboys did not wipe them all out :notme:

Good point, water will find its own level. It's amazing how fast the Internet is exploding, considering that the WWW just started coming into mainstream in 1997 in advanced countries.

Since that very recent past, new GTLDS .INFO and .BIZ were introduced to complement .COM, .NET and .ORG.

Quickly followed by a succession of new 2LD country domains - .US, .CN, .HK, .SG, .IN .... .EU, .UK......

It's been a very short couple of years, and in that short couple of years, Internet users grew by 10X pre 2000 figures.

The Internet has no place for those who think in a shell or believe established icons of the past must dictate the future. Leave that to the brick-and-mortar museums.
