3G LTE (Long Term Evolution) technologies is about to reach Release 8 of the 3GPP standard, planned for the third quarter of 2007. This will be the trigger for development of components and systems to provide 100 Mbps download speeds to mobile devices. Todays 3G systems can provide up to 14 Mbps download to mobile devices.
3G LTE will dramatically enhance the capabilities of 3G networks.
Network operators will invest a total of almost USD 18 billion in 3G LTE infrastructure over the period to 2014. This will yield a significant payoff, both in reduction of operating expenses and in the creation of new revenue from IP-based services.
3G LTE will be a giant step forward to an "all-IP" world.
Ericsson has conducted a live demonstration of its cutting-edge LTE system with speeds of up to 144Mbps at the 3GSM World Congress trade fair in Barcelona February 12-15, 2007.
