301 Redirect?

General question if anyone knows or has an opinion,

If I own 2 websites for instance the .com and .net,
Is it better to do a 301 redirect from one to the other.

Or to build a minisite and link that way.

With the 301, all traces of the site being redirected will be removed from the search engines. You will transfer almost all of it's former pagerank, link juice, etc. to the target site. "Almost" because a tiny amount of that gets lost with the redirect.

If you go the minisite route, both sites are indexed, but then you have to avoid doorway page and duplicate content concerns. You'll also have twice the work, as you'd need to update, promote, monitor both sites.

If it's all the same topic, it's MUCH easier to manage one site than two - unless there's strong justification, go with the redirect.

As said above avoid duplicate content.

By having two sites you have two gates to attract customers. You can use two websites and can do branding differently.

Earn double now. Just focus on SEO of both.

301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method for webpage redirection. It's not that hard to implement and it should preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page. If you have to change file names or move pages around, it's the safest option. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently".

Well I will only 301 within the site itself, I have many catches set up if the user accidentally types in the wrong url that is close enough to the right one, I will 301 them to the right page, and any search engine that for some reason had the wrong URL.

As my knowledge 301 redirect is best because it is permanent redirect tag.
