Hi, I'm Tim Smith, the author of Article Distributor, a freeware application that can help you quickly submit articles to over 200 article directories. I do not as yet run an article directory, but I likely will start one soon. I have written about 5 articles that have been submitted to various sites, and some have been succcessful at generating a few thousand extra hits during their "lifetime" (see below). The value of articles must be viewed from their two main benefits: Inbound links and traffic generation.

Articles are a good way to get free one way inbound links to your website IF you can quickly submit your articles. If it takes 3 minutes per site to submit an article, you are only generating 20 links per hour (assuming you can keep this pace up without going insane). Keep that up for 8 hours and you have 160 links. Even if you get really fast and do 30 per hour that's still only 240 links a day. Good to get PR 3, but not if you're aiming for PR 6. An automated or semi-automated app (like Article Distributor) can really help. Instead of doing 20 or 30 links an hour, you can easily achieve 200 links per hour. Good, but still not a great way to get to PR 6 or 7. The real value comes in getting other sites to reprint your articles from the article directory. This will only come in time and depends greatly on how good your article is. One more factor to consider is the amount of time it takes to sign up at each site. Manual signups will take easily 5 minutes or more per site; especially when you consider that many sites require you to click a confirmation link from an email. This is simply unacceptable if you only submit one article in your lifetime. On the flip side, the SEO value of these links is quite good. You get to pick your link text, and the page isn't covered with as many links as a regular directory page would be.

The other valuable factor with articles is traffic generation. Articles from great article directories are usually conveyed to a large audience in a newsletter or rss feed or some other form of "push" (as opposed to articles which sit in the directory until someone dredges one up with a search). I once saw 1700+ visitors for a three day period on a site that normally saw 300 visitors a day after publishing one article that was sent out in a newsletter. The site saw 8 times its normal sales volume for that 3 day time period. That was what really piqued my interest in using articles. From this stand point, not all article directories are created equal. Treasure_55 is absolutely right from this standpoint, because article directories that are actively pushing your content to other sites/people are not only gaining you links, they are gaining you eyeballs, and should therefore be the ones you really want to send articles to. Manually submitting to these type of sites is never a watse of time.

In conclusion, if you are serious about promoting your site, articles are definately one of the methods you should use. It shouldn't be your only method, but you should have at least one article for every site you own. Combine article submission with directory submissions and few blog comments, and you can easily achieve a PR 5 site.

I released the software on December 3rd. 210 copies were downloaded in December, and 209 copies were downloaded last month. Since version 1.1.2, the software automatically checks for updates every time it is run, I can also tell you that it was run 367 times in December and 922 times last month. I don't get this information through surreptitious means though, I just check my server logs.

The software is free, but you could say my "payment" is that I place a link to the software's download page in the resource box. So another check you can make is this search: http://www.google.com/search?q="submitted+with+article+distributor"

As for actual monetization, version 2.0 (currently in beta) opens to a page on my site that features advertising. These ad spots can be purchased to help support development, and some of the ads are ppc but please don't construe this as me asking you to click on them.

Version 3 (currently in planning) will be a complete rewrite using the .NET architecture. I currently use MSXML4, which is proving problematic for installs. It is no normally installed on a lot of machines, and installation of the MSXML4 dll in the windows/system directory is occasionally blocked by anti-virus software (thus the warning about error 1935 during install). .NET is much more cumbersome, but is more common and less problematic for installs.

Currently that is true, but version 3 is a complete rewrite using an entirely different data structure. This will allow me to just as easily code for non-AD sites. I'm planning on adding the all the big article directories (like ezinearticles, goarticles, etc), and then start adding different article directories based on pagerank. It will also send articles via email to the email lists.

I really try to code for my users, which means user feedback gets listened to, so if you really want a feature added speak up.

That is a huge list. Infact the largest list I have seen so far.

I have added this page to my favourates as I am most likley to be looking for article directories to submit my articles to sooner or later.

It should be noted that http://www.articlesender.com is not only an article directory but a free article distribution service which blasts your articles out to thousands of publishers.

nice mods Tim keep it up lately i've used your ad to connect to articlemarketer which submits about 100+ articles per day wow that's awesome.
