Chinese buy them for a number of reasons. Numbers have greater meaning in Chinese culture, and chat symbols (like our LOL, OMG, etc.) are usually numbers in China. Also, they often prefer numbers to Western characters. Many of the top Chinese sites are numerics (including NNNNN.com's). Plus they are scarce and many are already owned and used by companies/organizations in other countries (like Marchex (Nasdaq:MCHX) owns over 30% of NNNNN.com's as US zip code domains).
