ABOUT MIMO:
MIMO, which is expected to be the centerpoint of the new 802.11n wireless standard, offers up to eight times the coverage and up to six times the speed of current 802.11g networks. Major wireless networking manufacturers -- including Linksys, D-Link Systems, Netgear and Belkin -- have already released MIMO-driven "Pre-N" hardware in anticipation of an eventual standard.
The products all tout double (or more than double) the throughput and range of today's standards-based 802.11g and 802.11a products, which will make them suitable to carry multiple streams of high-definition television, gaming and Voice Over IP telephony.
Airgo Networks introduced the first MIMO chipset in 2004, and the third-generation chip is widely used in access points aimed at the small office/home office and residential markets.
New Wi-Fi Nearly Doubles Speed
New Belkin router and card bring budget MIMO to the masses.
