118 NNN is the number you dial for directory enquiries in the UK. There are now loads of companies offering directory enquiries.

It used to be that BT were the only ones with 192. But now there's 118 118, BT, Yellow Pages to name a few.

Yeah, as with all above, this is a uk thing. Most people here recognise that number, and it is a number associated with information. And, whats the internet for? (allegedly) INFORMATION! I agree with mr scotland above, it could have gone for a lot more.
