A few months ago I was introduced to HosterStats.com, a web site with a wealth of domain name data. The statistic in the headline of this post is somewhat surprising, but you’ll find it right here in HosterStats’ cross domain comparison.

Over 1.4 million domain names that are registered in .net aren’t registered in .com. Over 20% of domains registered in .org aren’t registered in .com. Think about all the errant traffic this sends to their non-existent .com counterparts.

You're about to set off a huge datamining expedition for squatters.

Surely they realise that there are such domains already? The level of Uniqueness varies across the TLDs but some of the domains have had their nameservers removed to hide them. Others are pending delete or redemption. But there are large numbers of domains that are unique to the various TLDs. I wasn't selling the lists of these domains though.

The strange thing is that .info has the highest number of Unique domains after .com tld. I've dug out some 2007 zones to do some comparisons for the height of domain tasting.

If you need a list of what they are, ... I know a guy.

Some cases, a person will go to reg the .com, see it's taken and would then take the .net. The .com would then drop & the .net owner wouldn't be aware. And if this is an obscure domain like RandysUsedTiresAndCarAutoParts.com (or whatever that isn't too desirable), there are high chances that the .com will go unregged for quite some time... possibly for years.

That's exactly my opinion on available .com's vs taken .net's

And what would the price for such a list be?

That's b/c they basically gave those .info's away, or for 99 cents. I come across a lot of domains where only the .com and .info is taken...or only the .info

True. It has created its own boom and bust cycle with new registrations spiking and deletions spiking a year or so later. But the .info is somewhat more recognised than .biz in Europe so there is a slight edge on .info usage. (They are still very much fourth choice TLDs after the ccTLD/com,net,org/eu choices.)

Well for a start, many .com domains have matching .net, .org, .info, etc. domains. And not to mention the websites over the world like co.uk and others!

In the comparisons for the other TLDs you can see just how many .com domains have their equivalent in the other gTLDs. The other comparisons are there in the menu bar. This is the .com cross TLD comparison.

HosterStats.com: .com TLD Cross Domain Comparison

The comparisons for com/net/org/biz/info/mobi/asia/tel are all there. The most commonest pairing for .com is com/ccTLD where many .com domains would have a similar one in a ccTLD. This is due to businesses registering their domain in the ccTLD and then registering the .com if it is available.

I think in some cases people register .net instead of a .com because of the small price difference (.net is cheaper).

I couldn't see a company regging the .net over the .com just to save about 50 cents or so.
