Obviously short namesare better for type in traffic. Are they given favor by the search engines aswell?
Google wouldn't give any algorithmic advantage to domain length, primarily because short domains that are meaningful have an advantage already.
RT5Y.com has zero SEO use because nobody searches for that.
Books.com has a huge advantage, not just for [books] but also any phrase with "books" in it - if you optimize your site to those phrases.
BooksBlahWoah.com isn't as good, because Google sees that as 3 words with only one being searched for.
Another aspect is click-thru rates in the search results. If your name is short and meaningful, your CTR will be higher than a domain that is long and meaningful. That is an SEO advantage.
Hm, very interesting... In last time, after Google updates, domain name is not so important.
On my blogs, i'm optimizing via long tail keywords. Results are very well. Domain name is not important so much.
I doubt having a short domain name affects your ranking, but it would be more user friendly and spread more easily by word of mouth.

Like the branding part... Pepsi, Coke, BMW and a few others are short names (acronyms maybe) but still memorable..Below are some advantage for choosing short domain name :
+Better for branding and adverts.
+Memorable: Short domains or often easier to remember.
+Loyal users enjoy short name since it’s quick to type.
+Easier to attract direct traffic or type-in traffic as they also call it.
+Keep their value or increase because of scarcity and high desire among domain investors to own them.
