when they first came out i invested in them i did get a real good domain name but i find it useless as you weren't able to use it as a domain name and you needed to use there interface. Just curious what is the intial purpose of .tel domains.
I cant remember exactly what the restrictions used to be years ago, but now it is a normally functioning 3 letter pronounceable extension with meaning and a low renewal fee.
'tel' could obviously be short for 'tele' which means anything over a distance. Pretty big changes in the world pertaining to this digital/distance phenomena. Could be potential for some valuable domains in this extension imo.
.Tel is a top-level domain (TLD) that makes it possible to register telephone numbers as domain names on the Internet and to associate those domain names with multiple Internet-based communication services.
The .tel TLD was originally proposed in 1998 by Telnic, a corporation based in the United Kingdom. Their application to the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for .Tel was approved in 2006. According to Khashayar Mahdavi, CEO of Telnic, "The .tel domain offers the first genuinely different use of domains since .com was first created. It will provide seamless integration of existing methods of communication with emerging technologies like VoIP (Voice over IP). This places the .tel domain at the core of the next phase of Internet development."
It was pretty much sabotaged with dot mobi release a couiple of years later i expected it to fair stronger but .mobi actually made some decent sales and was marketed strong.
