Trends have always been a part of the domaining industry. Whether it is the major Chinese trend where 4L .coms, which people wouldn't buy for $50 would sell for 4-figures, to crypto trend where some of the domainers ended up making major five and six figures sales, it is common for something or the other to come every 5 years or so.

I believe, since the technology landscape is changing, domain name industry is also bound to experience the impact of this, given that the industry sits at the center of the internet boom (minus the app-only business maybe). And the short terms trends that we see are a part of it.

Given the many number of trends right from the start of the business, which of these have you been a part of? What did you miss and wish you could have been a part of, is also an interesting question to share.

If you have stories around some of the major successes just like we saw one of the domainers sell CryptoGame(dot)com for high 5-figures, it would be interesting to listen to. Meanwhile, if there were major offers you declined, another interesting thing to let out.

Did you buy 4Ls at high prices following the trend? Could be a story or a learning if you share your thought process behind it.

Cloud was my biggest niche which I started investing in years ago, long before iCloud, Dropbox etc were around. Still own and sell quite a few cloud names today.

Sold quite a few solar names too.

Phenomenal! Can you share some stats or trends, if possible?
Like you picked up a lot of domains in 2000s or in 201x and the sales started coming in say 5 years or whatever, sale ranges etc?

I see that you are high into technology domains. And very high into VR, from your signature :xf.grin:

I sold quite a few names like CloudPros, CloudGuru, Cloudland, CloudCo and a few others in the $7k-10k range and still have quite a few decent cloud names which I get regualr offers on.

I had some really good success with the .DE extension in the mid xx,xxx range.

I find predicting what emerging tech will become big and then getting some good names in that niche and waiting until it becomes mainstream is a successful strategy that has worked for me. You do have to be very partient and be in it for the long haul but it certainly pays off if you get the technology right.
One thing you dont do is buy 100s of names in one niche, that defeats the whole purpose and those renewals (often 10 yhears or more) eat away any profit you get later on. You end up renewing them and then only selling say 20 of the 100 or 200 you have. That is a lot of renewal money wasted.

A better strategy is to say
Buy 20 names in VR
Buy 20 names in AR
Buy 20 names in Solar
Buy 20 names on Drones
Buy 20 names in Robotics
etc

Then if a specific tech fails, you dont end up losing out on loads of $$$ and hopefully the tech that does become mainstream, makes up for those losses.

Just a safer way of domaining and not getting caught up the "This tech will be huge, I will buy 200 names and sell them all when it becomes big" mentality. It doesnt work like that and you wont sell them all, try and get only a few and make sure they are the best names in the niche, rather go and buy a good name from someone who got in before you for $250 or $500, rather than hand-regging what is left over, at least you will be able to sell that name.
This paragraph is relevant in any niche in domaining I find. Always go with Quality over Quantity with domains.

Yes VR is a niche I started investing in a few years back, stil waiting but its has started :xf.smile:

Hope that helps, its certainly not a strategy for everyone

Good luck

Chinese wave paid off for me, because I regged and purchased names I would have never regged like 4L.net chips for handreg and sold for $250 to $400 in bulk. 4L.com too but not as many.

But did you see the trend coming?
