I recently learned that registrars can't give out promos whenever they feel like as much as they'd love to. It all boils down to the quotas the registry like Verisign imposes on registrars before they can give out promos for say transfers or domain registrations. This is common knowledge but that was THEN. In today's current coronavirus pandemic many companies are taking the initiative to help it's customers during this crisis. Case in point? Check the videos below. I know many on here will laugh when at me when I say this but during this crisis it's not about making money. It's about helping the customers who gave you money in the past and have made you rich. It's always good for business and PR to do such things as giving discounts or promos. Even ICANN recently invoked the 3.7.5.1 Registrar Accreditation Agreement . Good for them and domainers appreciate them for it.
So Verisign can either be in front of this or behind it.
