My friend used snapnames last month and a half for a domain.

My friend placed a backorder at $79 1 and a half months ago when the domain was expiring. Whois now shows snapnames owns it but they haven't given it to him nor did an auction for it. This domain is really obscure too so 99% sure no one else wants it but he wanted to make sure he got it.

They also sent him an email 2 weeks ago or so titled "Good news..." and it basically said he can buy the domain for $500 right away.

He go so pissed off that he canceled his account. He will not sign up again for the $70 backorder price but said If I can do it for him if I want. I really want him to get the domain and am upset at snapnames for what they did.

I placed a backorder for the domain yesterday and availability of the domain says "Unknown"

Can anyone shed some light on what snapnames is doing? We basically cannot get the domain from anywhere else because snapnames owns it now. I'm wondering if there going to start doing shill bids or whatever else sleazy crap they come up with.

What's the domain name? You can share it via PM and I can try to figure out what happened...

I appreciate the gesture but he doesn't want anyone to know about the domain. No offense to you, as I see you are a very active member here.

Is there anyway I can find out on my own?

I thought about contacting SnapNames but I have a suspicion that may trigger them to sell it for $500+ or whatever the else crap they want to do.

Sure... That's your prerogative. AFAIK, SN does not maintain inventory so I find it surprising. Without really investigating more, it's difficult to provide any possible solutions

The whois shows SnapNames Holding as Owner.

Hmm... Interesting. Is that the current whois or was that immediately after the drop? Snapnames allows private listings so it is possible that the current owner has listed it on snapnames... Not really sure... Sorry

Go to reg.ru and order a whois history for the name. It will tell you exactly who owned it and when. It cost 3 usd.

Best we can do when you wont share the name.

hi

i've placed orders on names, that didn't go to auction, which later went on sale at snap

but i didn't create a thread accusing them of being dishonest

and since you're speaking for someone else, perhaps rephrase the title, until you have factual evidence to make the claim.

then tell the world

imo....

I with Biggy on this one. No way snap stole the domain and subsequently sells it for 500 usd. Thats a non price. Has to be a domainer.

Agree with the guys. You cannot get any help or constructive feedback without sharing the name.

Is there anyway I can find out on my own?

Also, I agree with @biggie 's suggestion that you change the title, unless you have all the facts, but you don't have the facts at this time - considering you are asking for tips on how to investigate further.

Domains that end up with the Holding Account, SnapNames.com, Inc. data in WHOIS are usually moved to New Venture Services Corp at a later point, which is web.com's (owner of SnapNames) warehousing service. Domainers do not get a chance to grab these domains in auctions. These domains are then offered up for sale by NVS Corp at end-user pricing via platforms like Sedo.

Lol, whatever guys. You guys are acting like entitled neckbeards that can't have anything bad said about your savior Snap Names and the domaining industry. So what about those news articles of the past where Snap Names was found to be shill bidding? Didn't happen I bet huh?

And to Arca, if that's the case then why was the domain bought by them AT THE EXACT WEEK my friend backordered it from them? It went from a Whois of the original owner to the whois of Snap Names just a little after he backordered.

Yeah, just a coincidence. Our dear lord Snap Names couldn't have snatched it up once it realized from the backorder.

No we are just saying you are ignorant and dont have all the facts.

Sure snapnames could be pulling a fast one. But for 500 usd? Thats lunch money.

Lunch money. Okay I've had enough of this atmosphere. Please don't forget to fill up your Lamborghini after your 500 lunch.

SnapNames didn't "buy" the domain. Their parent company (web.com) saw that the owner had let the domain expire and decided that they wanted the domain for their own warehousing portfolio (new venture services corp) and basically took it for free, instead of letting complete the process of going through the SnapNames expired pre-release path where your friend would have been able to buy it.

Tucows is another domain that warehouses some of the expired domains of their customers, so domainers never get a chance to buy them in expired auctions, they get put into their own portfolio instead.

GoDaddy does not warehouse domains in this way, and let all expired domains go through expired pre-release where domainers can buy them.

Ignorant and don't have all the facts? Seems like an apt description for yourself as well. You clearly do not know how Web.com/SnapNames/NVSC work, and you are stating your incorrect assumptions as facts.

They would not sell warehoused names for $500 "lunch money"? Wrong.

The fact is that they price a lot of their domains below $500. In fact, I bought a web.com/snapnames/new venture services corp warehoused names for just $130 last month when I saw it listed on Sedo, and I've bought others for less than $500 too.

Same thing happened to me. I made a back order for $79 and a few days after I get an email offering me the domain name for $3000 the registrar is Netsol:

"Domains you ordered are now available for purchase at SnapNames!"

No auction no nothing.

I dont like snapnames i backorded a domain there that was expiring and they registered domain that was not in the drop list that was a mispelling of what i backordered and charged me $79. So after that i wont use them.

I dont like snapnames
Me either. Earlier this year they tried to charge me for a domain that I backordered two years prior. I think it was a LLLL.net chip. I was fine paying $69+ for it two years ago but not this year. So I refused to pay and they cancelled my acct. Thank goodness.

I'm amazed Snapnames is still going - It's a blast from the past. if I remember rightly they were one of the first (if not the first) publicised domain capture services offered. They must be doing something right to still be around otherwise a name change would have been first on the agenda. As for the original poster, Don't ever get hung-up about a domain not in your ownership - treat domains as whimsical land until you are the 'header' on whois
