advice When in doubt drop it out!

I don't know about you, but I have had a hard time dropping names over the years. Every year I keep holding on to names that I think have some inkling of selling. No more! I am tired of having thousands of names and the carrying costs associated with them. My new mantra is,

When in doubt drop it out!

There are millions of names to buy as a reseller and millions of choices for end users. Holding onto names that may have a chance of selling isn't the right idea anymore in my opinion. I only want names that will have a good chance of selling and have multiple potential end users.

You may say, it's only 10 bucks a year but when you come up on year 3 or 4 it starts to add up to a money pit of possible lottery tickets.

Choosing names more wisely is something I know, but have to implement much more often.

What are your thoughts on dropping names?

Monetise them. If they can't earn enough to cover renewal fees, then the chances are that they won't sell.

Monetise them. If they can't earn enough to cover renewal fees, then the chances are that they won't sell.

Reminded me of this .....

The inspiration for this comic was all of the times I’ve seen people ask each other how to monetize a domain while it sat parked, waiting to be sold.

It seems that no matter how many times this question about domain monetization is asked, the answer is always the same generic response. I can’t tell if people just want to participate without finding a real answer, or if they simply don’t want to reveal any secrets to competitors. Either way, I hope you enjoy this comic!

If they can be monetised that's fine, but if they won't sell, and there is little income from them, then better to drop them, hard as it may be.

@hookbox. PM me the list of domain names you're dropping. I'll offer $10 for any I like :)

PS: I'm going thru the same process as you. A lot of what I'm dropping are being picked up by other domainers. I'm going crazy whether I'm dropping the correct domains or not. How do I deal with that? I try to bury my head in the sand, and repeat the mantra "I'm doing the right thing, slimming my portfolio down to what I perceive are my best domains".

You are going to do some kicking out the baby with the bath water. It's inevitable, when cutting your domains by 25-50%.

most domainers aren't making parking money, so its not a matter of monatise or drop.. or else we'd be dropping pretty much all we own.

some future niches may require time to renew.. robot domains.. ai.. vr.. ar... and few others.. which makes sense.

otherwise, its a tough call what to drop or not.. many dropped domains end up sold by others.. but.. that's all part of domaining. there is good and bad in it.. like everything else ;)
