.tv YES, it's TRUE about Music.tv

I’ve seen the talk about MUSIC.tv and just thought I should state three very obvious facts:

  1. Not a lot happens in the domain world that gets missed - as my fellow NPers are pretty up to date on that WHOIS thingy and don’t miss a trick
  2. Yes, as the seller I can confirm that MUSIC.tv has been sold - and to some very nice chaps
  3. The old saying ‘you wait ages for a bus, and then three come at once’ is very, very, very true.

As you may know I recently sold US.tv - so the extra sale of MUSIC.tv is definitely a good start to the year. Actually, it's a pretty good start to the rest of the decade!

I have not asked the buyer of MUSIC tv if they want to disclose the amount it was purchased for, so all I can say is I am very happy and I think they are too. They were certainly good guys with a lot of ideas and I wish them well.

...and in a beautiful case of deja vu I can definitively confirm that the buyer is NOT Simon Cowell.

The negotiations began an incredible TWO years ago.

Since I announced the breakdown of much of my .tv portfolio I’ve also had a lot of smaller private $1k, $2k, $3k, $4k, $5k .tv sales in the past few weeks - most of which I have originated from my getting in touch with old contacts and friends here at NP and elsewhere. Many of these have been mentioned in the US.tv thread

In further developments I have also had a case of incredible good fortune/coincidence/research-proof/hardwork when completely out of the blue I was hit by a good five figure sale to add to the list.

This was from a German company for a name that I can’t mention other than to say it was a .tv name that I had previously come to the conclusion there was only me in the world who saw its value.

The deal has been escrowed by SEDO but the paperwork says it is not being publicised. No doubt at the request of the buyer.

Sorry to be so vague - but this is about professional respect to buyers tempered with my desire to let my fellow NPers know that sometimes good things do happen if you own good names - and the only thing wrong with many of people’s names is simply ‘their time to sell isn’t yet’.

But boy, when they do sell, things can change pretty quickly.

For those who are interested, from the 825 names I had at the time of the US.tv sale last month, I’m NOT yet down to the magic 25 ‘develop me’ names goal - but the figure now stands at an energetic 748.

I'm not a sales person and never have been, but in sales terms I've been really kissing those proverbial frogs and found it quite liberating.

This, of course does mean that I am still happy to listen to offers for some of my more interesting .tv names such as SCHOOL, WEEKEND, STUNT, RECRUITMENT, MILK, PARKING, FUNDING, even DEUTSCHLAND and STUDENT - oh yeah, and INTERESTING.TV

I know I said it before but it needs to be said again:

“Good domains are winning lottery tickets with the dates missing!”

Best wishes to all.

Not sure about sounding "Vague" but that sounded motivational to me.

Thank you! for sharing.

Thanks for the likes and the messages of congratulations.

Seems .tv is going through quite a healthy phase at the moment.

Of course, as the many experts out there will tell you, it won't last, so enjoy it while you can!!!!!

Congrats James, I discovered it by accident, since I knew it was yours and I saw a change in the Whois.
You really deserve all the success you had and you're having.

Very similar story to myself.... I specialize in Maple.ca & .com domains and buyers come to me. I have had 3 big ones and a number of regular sales.

You do it with an extension and I do it with a name but both are specialized.

As much as you were surprised by some of the sales, so was I. I always figured I was targeting the Canadian market but some of my biggest sales have been .com's to US companies.

"the only thing wrong with many of people’s names is simply ‘their time to sell isn’t yet’."
Excellent point!
Many "experts" have deemed certain types of domains crap....
Then a market emerges or a buyer shows up.
Great to hear from a domainer that believed in their purchase and stuck with it till the "time" arrived.
Congrats!

Very nice going on Music.TV. What a an incredible domain name. So much excellent potential and opportunity. Your points about good quality names and the necessity of patience ... speaks volumes.

Music.TV is a great name. However, assuming that MTV didn't buy this name, I am surprised that an end user would take the risk, both legal and in terms of costumer confusion, in using a name so similar to MTV.

As far as I know MTV has absolutely zero trademark claim on "Music Television" or "Music TV". It's simply "MTV", and legally I'm fairly sure they cannot broaden the scope of their trademark by saying the M is assumed to be Music. Music Television is a little too generic to be trademarked I'd think (almost definitely at this point).

It's a different thing however if they also trademarked "Music Television" back in the 80's (when it might have passed).

At the end of the day though .. they likely have the budget to actually get m.tv if they really wanted it ... lol

Plus .. MTV doesn't even have music anymore .. isn't it pretty much all reality shows now?
