Today we discovered the theft of a domain name. The domain was MGMT.com.

This is an extremely valuable domain name and was listed on Sedo.com for a relatively low purchase price. This along with a few other factors raised our eyebrows.

I am not sure if all domain buyer would check the previous owner and the status of privacy protection.

Big lesson here. Have 2 factor verification for both your email and your domain registrar. Stop these thieves in their tracks.

"Certainly makes you think twice about privacy protection"?

Surely if you contacted the Registry (if under privacy) they would have contacted him for you.?
Also, they wouldn't have been able to steal it under privacy?
Privacy also stops spam.
Good job trusting your gut !
Cheers

I was a victim as well years ago and I don't think it is easy to get it back. My email was hacked and some domains were hijacked more than 15 years ago, during that time, no "autho code" and the transfer are easily done

Hey guys.
The owner of this domain is still struggling to get it back. Who is the best person to help him out?
@Kate @Eric Lyon @Keith @promo

Can anyone help?

The domain name is currently at Enom.
Where is the rightful owner ? Why not invite him over here ?

The first step would be that he gets in touch with his (original) registrar. Then, when the theft is documented and established, there is a small chance that the two registrars involved can agree on returning the domain where it belongs. Since it's a .com, it can only 'jump' from one registrar to another every two months.
If it doesn't work, the other options are:
  • WIPO: sometimes used to recover stolen domains
  • obtaining a court order, you will probably need a lawyer to request a subpoena in order to gather digital evidence from the registrars
Also contact Sedo since the domain was listed there. Maybe the thief was dumb enough to leave personal data like name or financial information, or has legit names listed in this account, that are unrelated to the theft. This is assuming that the name has not already been flipped to another unsuspecting buyer, and the party is control is indeed the thief.

@Joe Styler

This domain was just moved to GoDaddy.

They say that they are unable to help the true owner who I've asked to join this thread.

I really want someone to help him, as I feel he is getting the run-around.

The fact eNom allowed for it to be transferred out to GoDaddy is shocking considering the fact they knew it was potentially stolen.

The new registrant claims to have purchased the name for $3,000. (May or may not be true)... I can say that the new registrant is the same person that is on my Sedo invoice from a couple of months ago.

UPDATE -

IVE BEEN INFORMED THAT THE NEW REGISTRANT IS TRANSFERING THE DOMAIN BACK TO THE TRUE OWNER.

Seems that there is a happy ending here.
